No idea how they actually do it, but nowadays it would probably be as cheap to do it with the indicators controlled using basic push switches, a microcontroller and digital compass as to use a more complicated mechanical mechanism for the switchgear and some means of measuring distance/lean - especially if the indicators are being used for something like a built-in alarm as well, so functions could be put together based on the same sensors and bulb/led drivers.
