Hello,

In August I will be in Ireland and for 22 years I have not visited the North. The previous time I was a student in Cork and it was Bus Eireann's 7th anniversary (94 I think) and all travel in Ireland was £7.

We had to switch buses at the border (coming up from Dublin) as there was a risk that Irish registered buses could be stoned.

Anyway, I was thinking about visiting the Titanic Museum, I have a very late Ferry from Dublin and thought it might make a good day out.

Now bearing in mind, I will have a few suitcases etc and it will be a UK car (fairly new, nothing special though - Zafira).

My previous visit went okay, but one mate got arrested for taking pictures of soldiers and I had to go between being English and Irish. (Irish student card and address, Yorkshire accent and UK driving license). But I don't intend to go the Shankill/Falls etc. (What was i thinking).

Has anyone else been, on the website it mentions an underground car park.

Any info appreciated.

My boss tours Ireland in her car, going to Belfast and never said she had a problem.

We toured Ireland, north to south via the west coast, but not into Belfast, again no problems, even when stayed near a traveller site.

I was thinking about this too, looking at going there next week on the bike. My mate at work is from Belfast. He has said, they have areas like anywhere, and as long as your not a dick then you will be OK.

My bike has a Scottish plate on it, so hopefully be OK Smile If I go, I will report back.

I went over (with a couple of mates) during the troubles when I was a member of a certain backpatch club to meet another club. I have to say I haven't met a friendlier bunch of people. We had more hassle off the army than the locals.

My family all reside around the Falls Road area. No bother will be had even if you decided to go there. Belfast is a very popular place these days, fret not.

I've been to Belfast on the bike several times recently. It is just like
visiting any other city. There are no formalities at the border these
days. The only indication that you have crossed the border is that
the speed limit signs change from km/h to mph.

Having a foreign reg or a rental car makes you a target
for criminals in any large city. Be careful where you park
and don't leave any valuables on display. I hate to say it,
but I would be more nervous about parking the bike here
in Cork or in Dublin.

Is there a law against taking pictures of soldiers?

****************************
Car Parking
Titanic Belfast has 520 secure, underground parking spaces. Parking charges begin at £1.50 for the first hour and £1 per hour thereafter. The underground car park has a maximum height of 2.1 metres. For high sided vehicles there are several pay and display above ground car parks available nearby on Queen’s Road.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but how does one go about leaving a certain back patch club normally?

Just remember to take one of these with you.

Another few of us on here, did a tour of Northern and southern Ireland last year. We had no problems at all. Well, except for breakdowns and punctures and rain, lots and lots and lots of rain.

On good terms Laughing

It was many years ago, back in the 80's. I was spending so much time out of the country I couldn't give the commitment to the club that they expected or I wanted to give so I talked to the people who counted, resigned my patch and became a 'associate' of the club, to be called on if required.

As with everything, hearsay, stories and Sons of Anarchy are not always the truth. Wink

Oddly I found the republic to be friendly than the north. Only thing I would say about driving in the North (around dodgy areas) is that you know when you've taken a wrong turn Smile

A bunch of us rode to the west coast a few years back. No problems whatsoever with the bikes on GB plates. The only problem we had (other than wind from the black stuff...) was in a bar full of folk taking it in turn to sing. A drunk lady asked us if we would sing, and none of us had a song. At that point things turned nasty - she accused us of being 'army', the piano stopped and we left sharpish...

Don't cross the border around South Armagh and you will be fine.
