A mates coming up to 2 years on his A2 license and obviously wants to upgrade, but doesn't want to pay out the ears for tutoring and bike hire etc.

His KTM RC390 doesn't meet the requirments to sit the test as it's not got enough powahh, so he's asked me if he can lend mine.

He's got insurance sorted on the bike so that's not an issue. Am I right in thinking all that would need to happen is for me to give him a seater to the centre, slap on some L Plates and send him on his way while I have a brew with DVSA Derek?

Am I allowed to ride there with the L plates already on?

He's brave doing the Mod 1 on a 636, I marked out the 7.5m for the u-turn just to see if it can be done and I can only just get it round 5/10 times. Be a pain getting it through the slalom aswell.

Isnt it a maximum of 47bhp bike he can use? Either way a 636 is not realy suitable imo, the slalom should be ok but the u turn 😨 good luck to him. He wouldn't be allowed to ride a 636 until he passed the mod2 would he?

It's a minimum of 54bhp and 595cc to take your Mod 1 on.

Wouldnt be able to ride it on his own until after Mod 2 no, but with the insurance he has, he can ride the 636 aslong as he's with an instructor.

Like I said it is doable, there is just very little room for error (around 1ft), and it's a bit of a pain with arm positioning because of the tank. The 7.5m we were practicing in seemed a lot bigger than the 7.5m I had on my mod 1 aswell Laughing

Yes, Highway Code and Motor Vehicle [Driving Licences] Regulations both state that they should be removed if the vehicle isn't being driven by a learner, but it's not a must. It will however draw unwanted attention, and you probably want to avoid that.

Yeah fair one it probably would raise a few eyebrows if I've got someone on the back with L plates. Don't think Derek would accept, "sorry mate got pulled by the rozzers" as an excuse for being late.

Easy thing to do with the L plates - fit them then tape a bag over them or cover them with insulation tape (easy to pull off in the car park, especially if it's a pound shop cheap roll).

The U-Turn would be a pain, even for an experienced rider.
Otherwise yeah you can take him pillion as you suggested.
A bit of tape crossing out the L on the plates would suffice, but as said, it's not a legal requirement, due to learner cars being driven around with all that livery and roof mounts.

I'd suggest trying to source something more like an ER6 or a FZ6, they are infinitely more suited to the uturn than a sportbike.

All good so far.

He's not required to wear hi-vis on test, but DVSA Derek will be used to seeing all candidates wearing it (since you have to wear it while under big-bike instruction). So I'd pick one up from Poundland while you're getting the plates and tape.

The bike can't be obviously non-roadworthy or showing any warning lights (engine, ABS) so tape over them if necessary.

The other option is for chumrade to buy his own bike if he wants something less sportsbikey, insure it through Bikesure or Bennets on his provisionaL entitlement, then you ride it in for him.

Really? (having just checked the dvla website.. yes)

That must have pissed off the test centres. I did my test on a 500 before this mod1/2 stuff; having to change all their bikes to 600s to be eligible must have been a right pain.

Never realised that. (not that its applicable to me in the slightest but well.. the more you know..)

They had something like 6 years to do so, we're really just talking about replacing an ER-5 with an ER-6.

Numbernerd trivia, the old GS500 was exactly the minimum power for the pre-2012 DAS tests, and exactly the maximum power for post-2013 A2.

ER6 would be perfect. I wish I'd done it on mine, but I only found out when selling it how easily the restriction can be removed. It's literally a single bolt to take a plate off the fairing and then two phillips head screws holding in the throttle stop. Ride to test centre with restriction in, whip it out* in car park and it's only the size of a coin so can just go in his pocket for the test.

iirc instructors have special dispensation as they're usually going between learners and stopping to take the plates / triangle off all the time would be a pain.

my friend that runs a training school just puts insulating tape as an X over the L plate in the same way you sometimes see with rally cars being transported on the road.

After DVSA Derek taking his license and effectively seizing the bike, and a trip to the cop shop to sort it all out... Mod 2 passed
