sanding paper before respray?

i've just started to work on repraying, managed to get all decals off fine .
Now trying to strip paint work, the paint is white-pearly stuff.
I know about the rubbing compound , but wanted to know if sanding it lightly would in any way damage the fairing?.

It will damage it if you use coarse grade paper.

Use a very fine grade paper, with some water and rub in a circular motion. Then just use finer grade paper until the surface is smooth. It wont damage it unless you really go crazy with it, or use paper that leaves deep scratches in it.

Just remember to prime it before you start respraying

Have you any idea what grade of wet/dry constitutes "fine" or very fine? Carpenters refer to 220 as *fine* & that will bugger up the paint in one pass....

& if you are ggoing to paint it the same colours as it is now ya have to realise that what ya have there is 3 stage paint:
Base/Colour
Pearl/Mica
Clear

How far do you plan on rubbing it down? all the way to the base coat or..?
