I was at the Ulster Grand Prix today. In the first lap of the first race (Production 1000) a bad accident happened at Wheelers Corner. 3 bikes were involved in an oil spill and one rider died on the spot. A spectator also got his leg broken. Sad start to the day.

Is that a road race the Ulster Grand Prix? Do they know where the oil came from?

Yeah it's a road race. They are not sure but they reckon it was from one of the bikes on the warm up lap.

Shit Crying or Very sad That's terrible.

I'm all for a crash on a race track as long as it's a nice, happy, silly-looking crash and nobody is injured.

The oil should definitely be investigated so that sort of thing doesn't happen again.

I should really stop being sadistic and want to see crashes on race tracks when things like this happen, but gladly it doesn't happen that often thank god!

My condolences go out to Andy Wallace's family and friends. Smile

I don't think anyone is any the wiser to how it happened. It's a fast sharp corner. There was about 4 or 5 accidents today, not a good day all in all. Road racing is really too dangerous where as if you crash on a track chances are you'll go into tyres - if you crash on the road you may go into a tree - that's how Joey Dunlop died on the 125.

Yes I agree, people who enter road races are probably aware of the risks but its still sad when someone dies.

Obviously deaths acure on race tracks as well but alot less frequent.

Yeah I don't get the road racing scene, yeah it looks like fun, but by God it is incredibly dangerous.

One mistake and its good-night.

I would certainly not miss it.

Condolences to all the friends and family involved.

R.I.P.

sorry to hear that Thumbs Down Crying or Very sad

but in response to road racing comments, its infinately more entertaining than race track races, and its without a doubt because of the risks involved

i find it hard to watch a whole bike GP on a track, but could happily watch road racing for hours

hats off to the guys who are mad enough to do it Thumbs Up

But it is what people want to do and enjoy doing. They know the risks and for some that is part of the attraction.

All the best

I am a big fan of it and I find it hard watching track racing compared to road racing. I wasn't saying I didn't like it just that you stand more of a chance on a track if it all goes Pete Tong.

The subject of "should it be banned?" comes up every year at the TT races because sadly it seems inevitable that people will die. Road racing is exciting and totally different to track racing; the danger adding to the excitement. I hope the Ulster GP and the TT races do not attract more attention of those who support the "Nanny State".

Racing on the closed roads is the 'purist' form of roadracing. As far as i'm concerned it's the last true gladitorial sport. I certainly hope the sport is never banned as everyone who takes part knows the risks, which i dare say is a big part of the attraction of roadracing. My thoughts always go out to the friends and familys of those who die racing on the roads.
