Bit of history to this one, so I'll start at the start.

Replaced scratched stator cover. Bit of a nightmare. The stator wiring runs into the bowels of the bike and is not detachable easily from what I could see, unlike 600rr. So did the best I could, leaving the stator hanging while I replaced the cover.

Much blood, sweat and tears later, I have got the cover off, stator out, stator into new cover, hondabond-ed everything and I am bolting the new cover back on. This is where my nightmare begins.

I manage to break two of the bolts thanks to a faulty torque wrench.

After topping up the oil I decide to leave it for a couple of days to allow the Hondabond to set.

I go for a ride and discover the cover has a slight oil leak. Bugger.

Few days later I go for a longer ride. The ABS light starts flashing. 20 miles later it cuts out. Check all fuses. Nothing wrong. Won't start. "Fizzing" noise from near battery when I press ignition.

Recovery technician says my battery is flat and battery regulator is stuffed.

I have it booked into the dealer. In the meantime, what can I do? What caused the regulator to fail? Why did the battery go flat? Is the regulator actually the problem or is it the stator? Any test I can do?

If it's booked into the dealer, why worry about it?

Regulator/Rectifier on Hondas can just fail. If it's failed and isn't charging the battery it'll end up flat. Could be that your stator is goosed.

Best way to check the reg/rec is to get the bike running and get a multimeter across the terminals. You want to measure the voltage and idle and at 5k rpm. Or you can just see if the headlight gets brighter as you rev it. No increase in brightness = battery not being charged so possibly a dead reg/rec.

Trying to save myself £££ if it's something I can fix myself, and trying to figure out if it's something I've done that's buggered it up so I don't do it again.

This is the first thing that's gone wrong with the bike. Can't be a coincidence that it happened after I messed about with it.

Bike won't start. What does reg look like ? I can't find a service manual online. I can post some pics later on but I think it's the flat thing next to the battery. That could be the lean sensor though.

Meh, its Honda. I'd buy a stator and regulator, fit them and replace those consumables again in 10k.

Should you have oil behind the stator cover? I'm not certain but every bike I've looked at, the Stator is dry.

Yes. The oil cools the stator. There are a few videos on this on Youtube. A little oil spills out when you remove the cover.
