I did the whole lot in August last year. Now looks shit, patchy and chipped again.

Like a twat went with Ronseal Decking Stain at great cost.

What's the alternative that at least last a year and doesn't look shit after 1 winter?

Also the best way to remove the old stuff, floor sander I assume for belt & braces.

TIA

Stain or paint?

I used paint on mine because I didn't believe any product would last well, but paint was easy to remove with a pressure washer and then reapply on a 2 yearly basis.

For the first few years I just left it bare and jetwashed the algae off it every so often Thumbs Up

Maybe it's just me being slow, but did you put a stain on it when new, and you want to put another stain on it now?
Or was the original paint? or?

If you did the job properly you will have used treated timber, which repels most things including paints and stains. You can apply stains immediately after building but will need at least three coats (probably more) of a really good stain, it is best to let the timber weather for a few months before applying coats of anything but5 you're already past that point.

I prefer Cuprinol Ultra Tough for that kind of job. You will have to clean back the old shit with a pressure washer before applying anything else. If you have overhanging trees, pergola type shit or any other kind of organic stuff over the deck it will make it green regardless of what you coat the timber with.

I inherited it when I bought the house. It looks manky then, so I jet washed and treated and then stained.

Looked great for 6 months, now looks shit again.

I fear its past it now to get any decent finish.

You need to coat it with the ground up flesh of Charlie Dimmock, Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh. It wont improve the look but it will be payback for the bastards who made decking popular in the first place.

Rip it up and re-task it as raised beds.

I did mine with Wickes' own decking stain (Natural Oak) and 2 years later most of it was still as good as new. There was a reasonably distinct lighter track where most of the walking is done and there was an amount of green staining under the canopy of the copious amounts of foliage her indoors has covered it with.

This year I jet-washed off the whole lot, easily removing the green discoloration, and reapplied the same stain. It looks as good as new.

My sister's place had decking when she moved in. It was past it's best, but she cleaned it up and it didn't look too bad for a couple of years, then it needed doing again and then again the following year. Last year she had it all taken out and put a patio down. When it was pulled out some of it was surprisingly rotten.
If you go down the route of replacing the decking, have a look at the composite stuff. Some versions come with a 20 year guarantee and it can look pretty decent.

I wouldn't use wooden decking again. The plastic stuff is strong, light, always straight, rot proof and
re useable if you use stainless screws. The more you walk on it and the less you maintain it after install the better it looks.
