I'm heading down the St Ives for a weekend next month. It's not a biking trip but I will be riding there and I hope to get a decent ride in, one morning.

On that note, can anybody recommend any particular roads or spots to visit down that end of Cornwall?

If you get the chance, walk a stretch of the coast path - it is imo the very best thing about Cornwall. Even if you only go to Lands End and walk about a mile along that bit, it'll take you away from the tourist crowds and give you a taste of the wildness of the cliff tops. Or if you have time to go to the south coast at Polperro, a lovely little harbour village, with similar easy access to the coast path. Shouldn't be too crowded after the school holidays.

I thought St. Mawes castle worth a visit, and good roads to get to it (A3078, off the A390), and views across Carrick Roads and the river estuary.

There are a number of places all around the coast where you can get to little harbours and seaside villages, many of which are worth a look. I tend to avoid most of the bigger towns inland - the coast is where it's at if you want to pick up the character of the place.

Lost Gardens of Helligan - worth a wander around but NOT in bike gear.

And as above, Eden Project.

Don't bother with St. Hostile ( Austell) ....

Actually, if I remember rightly, you can head west on the coast path from St. Ives itself and quickly get to some of the best parts. (I walked about 200 miles of it in 1998, so memory is a little hazy, but I do remember I wanted to get out of the crowded town as quickly as possible, and didn't need to go far to regain the wild, solitary feel of the cliff tops - I skipped a chunk around Hayle to the east by bus, as it wasn't worth seeing).

Feck it, I've got loads of time on my hands, so here's some pics of my last Cornwall tour, maybe give you some ideas Smile

Cliffs at Rame Head, south coast, east of Looe:

Masted ship at Charlestown, south coast, near St. Austell - nearly always something of interest like this in the harbour, and a maritime museum, cafes etc:

St. Mawes castle:

Tin mine relic on the coast road heading for Lands End:

From the cliff path at Lands End:

Polperro, south coast, near Looe:

https://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b550/nicknicklxs/DSCN1452_zps5iiv2shc.jpg

Looe harbour, south coast:

Seems most of the places I visited were on the south coast. The north coast is a bit less accessible but the most beautiful part Rolling Eyes

Cheers guys.

I should say, I'm looking more for good riding roads and spots to stop off or pass through, rather than day-trip type activities (though they're still welcome suggestions, just in case).

I figured I'd use the opportunity to get up promptly and spend a few hours on the bike in the morning. Looking like I'll do a bit of a loop around the coast--B3306 from St Ives to St Just; Sennen Cove or Lands End; B3315 around to Newlyn and Penzance and then...I don't know. Maybe back to St Ives or maybe somewhere else.

Missing out the middle bit at the moment. I don't expect to go much further east, so St Mawes looks like a good visit but unlikely to happen.

A walk along the coast path sounds well worth it though--will make time for a bit of that.
