short version,

Friend's bike was picked up and chucked in the back of a transit from a 'secure' car park (staff car park, swipe card access) carried out on the footpath.

insurance seem to be saying 30 days before settling - is this for the police to do something incase it turns up?

police haven't been despite cctv and also a phone call a day or so later from someone saying "pay us £600 and we'll take you to where we have your bike in storage"

Sounds like someone else in the company has set the whole thing up and doesn't have any idea what to do with a stolen bike.

.. Well, that's my first thought anyway.

30 days to settle after a theft? Sounds pretty good to me, ive had 3 bikes stolen and it took at least 3 months to get any cash out of the insurance company on both of them. One was stolen 5 weeks before I was due to go on a bike trip to Spain, I told them this and they just said "we will not pay out on the claim in case the bike turns up", I ended up buying a GSXR1100 slabbie, it was shit so I swapped it for a ZZR600 and went on holiday on that. I got paid out after 5 months and much arguing. The first offer was £2500 for a 3 year old ZX9R C1, cheeky bastards.

He should call back and demand they put his bike on the phone to prove it's still alive.

Does your policy cover you for a hire bike? They might be tempted to settle a bit sharpish if you were using that facility.

That's when they start mailing bits back in the post. Spark plug first, then mirror, brake lever...

30 days, yes it will be due to the possibility to it turning up. bare in mind they will want to see the bike if it does and do all sorts of checks on it to make sure you haven't gone outside your policy terms. So that will also take time.

As for the Police, yeah don't expect them to be turning up at your doorstep wanting to try to solve this case.

And how did the wood be theives get your mates number? Seems strange.

I'm being vauge in details as my friend doesn't know I'm asking on here,

did the usual posting up on facebook with photo and numberplate on local biking pages, eg where my friend did their CBT forgetting that my friend's profile is linked to their business page with contact details.

Doh! Doh! Doh!

That sucks, problem he has there is you don't know if they actually know anything about the bike, could be just trying it on.
