as far as I remember the plate must also have the british standard on it (bsau mark) and the postcode of where the plate was made but its a few years since ive delt with them and info may be out of date

Your exhaust technically cannot be louder that the OEM part so he was correct.

He was also correct on the plate, ignoring the size legally they must be BS marked and include the plate makers details.

In short the officer was correct, you're completely wrong and talking crap.

Fess up to the number plate. There's no wiggle room there.

What equipment did he use to measure the volume? The C&U noise limits (actually EU limits, thanks Brussels) are done in a well defined ride-by test. If he did a static test or used the Mk 1 Earball, I'd be minded to tell them to do one on that.

PePiPoo would be better for that. The advice that you get will be directly related to the amount of information that you choose to provide.

Your own research shows that the officer isn't wrong and wasn't talking crap.

The small writing at the bottom he's referring to is:

"To meet the British Standard, each number
plate must be permanently and legibly marked with the
following information.
- The British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d)
- The name, trademark or other way of identifying the
manufacturer or supplier
- The name and postcode of the supplying outlet"

To be honest dude there wasn't anything abusive about it, I just wanted someone to say yes or no if I needed to change it, that's all!! So apologies on my part for that, but I've got my answer and I'm cool with that 😊

Don't those regs about the makers mark etc only apply to vehicles from 2001 onwards?

If your bike is older than that, they'd have to prove that the number plate had been replaced since then.

(Letter sizes etc still apply)

this number plate thing is annoying

I have a legal plate right now, it's a matter of weeks, or maybe days before it gets shattered into little bits when I'm green laning, then I'll face the temptation of buying a not legal but but much tougher aluminium one Sad

Why not just Gripfill a plastic one to some thick ally and then mount it?

Are plates like this one not legal? Genuine question - I'd been considering one as a replacement for a delaminating one on one of the bikes.

Saw someone with their numberplate on their rucksack today hooning around, made me chuckle, then they went through burger king drive through without stopping or buying anything.

Can't find anything preventing the use of a pressed plate, as long as the backing is reflective and the lettering black. That one has the relevant BS marking, etc, as well.

All the best

I use these in the legal size, you don't get points for a small or unstamped plate
so go the right size ( the eu is pish , next on their list is only mecha nice can work on your bike and everything must be as it came from the factory , so fvck you eu)

I bought a new reg plate for mine from Halfords a few months ago and it hasn't got a BS mark or place of manufacture. All the sizes are correct. Is it seriously illegal? Rolling Eyes

I thought the Halfords ones had the company name/postcode in a very light print so they are almost invisible unless you look closely (which is legal, and nicer than having it jump out at you).

Nothing wrong with Aluminium plates as long as they meet the British Standards. Got a set on my truck.

I never checked that - if it is, then its VERY discrete.
