Because even a "flawed" computer is far, far more competent than humans are.

The same way as we train drivers to make fewer mistakes, this is very young technology that has proven it is safer than humans. The technology will only get better.

Apparently it crashed into a telephone pole further along... just to make sure.

No, the massive running and maintenance costs. With the addition of lack of demand killed the Concorde.

I thought Concorde was meant to be uncrashable, then obviously it did and its reputation was severely damaged.

To the point where it can distinguish between a white truck and the sky? Clapping Driverless cars might just have had its Hindenburg moment.

It's OK, plenty of progressives who will never, ever, be able to afford Robocar will rally round to sing its hypothetical praises.

The software is only as good as the humans programming it. Vision systems, the sensory systems used are still in their infancy. I have actually seen similar faults as they claim caused this problem on manufacturing equipment, the difference being lives were not at risk.

In other news I did see a paintball drone executing people on foot, the future is scary Shocked

Unlike most car drivers who struggle to distinguish an oncoming motorcyclist on a 1/4 tonne motorcycle with two 55w headlamps and wearing an orange dayglo vest with scotchlite stripes from an empty piece of road.

trains, planes and automobiles all will be driverless before too long. God help anyone who may find enjoyment in operating any of them.

Source? From my research Concorde was operating at a profit, and was only struck down after the mandatory safety enhancements that were to be made after the one crash (that DEFINITELY was not Concorde's fault) created a financially unfeasible situation.

https://thetravelinsider.info/2003/0411.htm

Quote:
Sadly, Concorde has not been flying full recently, and BA's first and business class traffic dropped disastrously on all its planes in March.

Some Concorde flights are rumored to be operating with less than one third of the seats sold, and many of the few seats that are sold are heavily discounted package deals, selling for less than half the full published fare. In such a situation, a Concorde flight is unlikely to make money.

Quote:
A far-sighted airline would simply put their Concorde planes into storage - along with all the other many thousands of planes currently sitting idle in the desert - and then return them to service when economic conditions improve.

Alternatively, if they felt certain that there was no way that they could ever expect to profit from their planes again in the future, surely they'd then seek to sell them for as much money as possible to whoever else was as 'foolish' as to attempt to operate them

There was already doubt by the operators about their continued ability to generate profit. The Air France incident wasn't the sole reason, it was simply just the final nail in the coffin. The final reason to call it quits, it had revenue issues for a while before that.

Let's be honest, it's the dickhead drivers like the truck driver in this one https://youtu.be/y4bQBJ2Cfqk?t=18 that need to be replaced by AI ..

I'd still be interested to see how these cares cope with a motorcycle in front or beside them when changing lane rather than another car or larger object.

On my pedal cycles I've had multiple passes by the same 2 tesla cars at NSL speeds always around the 70-75cm mark, which is uncomfortable & close enough to require steering correction. Maybe just shit driving but the consistency of the pass suggests to me it may well be auto-pilot.

Something 75cm away makes you change steering?

The that close with a car passing at that speed the draft is enough to push & pull the bike a bit. This means you have to correct the bike to keep it going in a straight line, also you need to move the wheels back under the bike.

Thinking about this a bit more, I've come to the conclusion that I'm a bit jealous of Tesla owners, but I also really want them to succeed.

It's an electric car that costs the same as most high-end but not ridiculous money cars, with the price for the new one dropping to the price of a mid-spec BMW 3 series.

The acceleration is just phenomenal. A friend of mine showed me a video of him and a few friends - all bikers - doing a full-bore acceleration run on the IOM. The people made loud, impressed noises. It was a genuine 0-100mph in not many seconds with no driver skill required.

The range is around 250 miles. That's enough.

It can drive itself. Maybe not to the point of fully ignoring it and having a snooze, like on a train, but to the point where you can just keep an eye on it during a long motorway journey and look around a bit, or eat a sandwich. Then when you get to fun roads, you can take control and enjoy the power.

I can see why they sell out so fast. Why would you buy a mid-spec BMW when you can have the future car.

A witness has said that the Tesla driver had been watching a Harry Potter movie - (he had some serious faith in the autopilot!)
