PostPosted: 12:11 - 22 Jul 2016    Post subject: Car Dealer Service - £240 for an Oil Change. Do it myself? Reply with quote

I purchased my car last year when it was 12 months old, it is now 24 months old and is 1 year since it has been serviced.

The car now has 12K miles on it.

Vauxhall have quoted me £240, for what I can see is a load of "checks" and an oil change. Shocked Shocked

I'm reasonable on cars, i've always serviced my own cars in the past, oil/plugs/filters etc. But i'm not a mechanic.

It's just that this car is under warranty.

I can get a full service kit for less than £50 with genuine parts, for everything including Plugs/Oil/Oil FIlter/Fuel Filter/Air Filter.

I'm just not too sure on this, lots of people say buy the parts do it yourself.

Some say go to any garage that is VAT registered and get them to do it.

Others say, go down the dealer front.

It is highly likely, I will be keeping the car till its old and rusty. (So having a dealer service history might not be that important).

Any help.

Cheers Surprised

if you DIY and the engine goes bang in 12 months time, there's a good chance they won't honour the warranty. you don't need a full service so just get an independent garage with qualified mechanics to do whatever is required by Vauxhall at 2 years/12k.

Also use a genuine filter and the right oil. the filters cost so little it's not worth scrimping

You could even try a different dealership or find a local trustworthy place that can also do the Service reset on the onboard computer.

We have just traded in our Honda Civic - the basic Service from the main dealer was about £100 more than the local independent place. Which happened to be the same place that the Honda dealership took any car that was taken into them for an MOT.

Have you rang any local VX/Indy garages?

Take it to a vat registered garage thats not a vauxhall stealer. It will go wrong whoever services it.

£240 is a major service on my Suzuki. You sure it's not a major one?

There are cars I'd do an oil change happily, then there are cars that require a certain level of ingenuity and then there are cars that require a ramp of some sort. Now, what kind of car is yours?

I did a 12k service on my 2 year old Vauxhall a few weeks back. Air filter, oil filter, oil and spark plugs.
I'm not a mechanic, it was embarrassingly easy.

Yeah that's the thing. I have always since I had my first car at 19 and I'm now 43. But I've never had this new a car before.

Saying that I've had new bikes and paid for a dealer service.

And it is just an oil change.

When i traded in my last car the dealer looked at the huge pile of receipts from my indie specialist then looked at the service book that hadn't been stamped for two years and said "not much history with it is there?".

Me neither but when you see how easy the access is to the oil filter and find out how simple it is to get the spark plug module off, you really have to do it yourself.
Changing the air filter was just a matter of undoing some screws.
You certainly won't want to pay anyone.
I'd be embarrassed to take money for it, tbh.

Which model is it btw?

Get it done by an independent. You may save £100 doing it yourself, but the warranty is worth more than that, and you'll know more than that off the value of the car.
