Hi all,

A good friend of mine lost his right leg below the knee in a bike accident several years ago. Following this he retained his full bike licence but had two codes applied to his previously full manual driving licence:

Codes: 78,35

These mean he is now restricted to driving automatic vehicles with a modified control layout (e.g. left foot throttle).

He would like to get these removed so he can drive a regular manual car again, as he does this off road and has full control etc. with the prosthesis. Is it as simple as him just taking a full manual car test to convert to a manual licence? Will this remove the code 35 (Modified control layouts)?

I'd appreciate if anybody has any advice, as nobody seems to really know!

Cheers.

He needs to speak with his GP and or his consultant as they're the people the DVLA will check with.

He can also speak with the DVLA Medical Group on 0300 790 6806.

Then he needs to fill in form G1 and assuming his GP and consultant agree that he doesn't need to be restricted to an automatic vehicle with a modified control layout, he'll get his license back without any codes on it.

It's not as simple as him taking a full manual car test to convert to a manual license, removing the codes from his license is something that's decided by the DVLA Medical Group and they base their decisions on what his GP / consultant say.

There's not really any point him doing anything until he's spoken with his GP to find out what their opinion is.

Ste's spot on.

Just one other thought......

Are there any forums for people who use prosthetics or who have disabilities where you could ask the same question?

Thanks all Very Happy

He's going to see his consultant and send that form off. See what happens!

Cheers!
