Large amounts of military activity being reported on Twitter. Videos of low flying F16s over Ankara, bridges to the Bosphorus closed, something is afoot.

Drill, anti-terrorist lockdown or Putsch?

With everyone distracted by the Nice attack it's a good day for the military to clean house with minimal external fuss.

News on twitter? uwotm8?

Turkey soldiers launch 'illegal action' - PM Yildirim

Turkey's PM has denounced an "illegal action" by a military "group", with bridges closed in Istanbul and aircraft flying low over the capital, Ankara.
Binali Yildirim said the military action was not authorised but it was not a coup. He said that the government remained in charge.
Traffic has been stopped from crossing both the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul.
There are also reports of gunshots in the capital Ankara.
Mr Yildirim told NTV television by telephone: "We are working on the possibility of an attempt. We will not allow this attempt." He did not elaborate.
"Those who are in this illegal act will pay the highest price," he added, saying it would not be correct to describe the move as a "coup".

You shouldn't mock Pravda, they were probably waiting for someone upstairs to give them their official spin on the story.

A Turkish news agency has published a statement from the military saying the armed forces have "fully seized control" of the country.

The Dogan agency reported that the statement said that the military did this "to reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated."

The military statement went on to say that "all international agreements and commitments will remain. We pledge that good relations with all world countries will continue." -- ASSOCIATED PRESS

It sounds a bit more than a coup attempt. It looks like he might be toast or at least on a private jet to somewhere else counting his shekels.

That's how the Soviet Central Committee deposed Krushchev. Wait until he's relaxed and away from the centre of power with minimal immediate support. If he's escaped by jet then maybe they're happy to let him go, rather than undergoing the unpleasantries of a criminal trial at home, and the resulting airing of dirty laundry?

I hope somebody will take control over the borders now and not allow another dictator here.

Military claims to have taken control, but there are videos of soldiers being arrested and carted off. Army don't seem to have the numbers so I suspect it has failed.

After remaining in a holding pattern to the West for some time Erdogan's private jet has just landed at Ataturk Airport.

It might well be over.

There are still airstrikes taking place and a raid of another news agency. The army do seem to have really small numbers so I can't see them winning against the cops.

Sky News are total fucking retards.

"FlightRadar24 shows tanks at the airport".

https://i.imgur.com/edBplb6.png

But lets take a look at a couple other airport around the world, because surely if there are tanks in that pic then there must be tanks all over place.

OOOOO Look at JFK, there's a sneaky tank.

Looks like shit is going down in Amsterdam Shocked Shocked Shocked

Y'know because it's impossible that airport maintenance ground vehicles would ever be used.

Continued air strikes is very strange. Generally speaking only one group can control the airspace, since any unauthorised flights tend to get shot down by fighter jets on air policing alert.

If those strike jets aren't being shot down then the government has lost control of the air policing (i.e fighters, radars, military ground control).

They had a laugh though, and I'm sure they'll be dealt with fairly and transparently. Whistle

Needed better PR, nobody seemed to know WTF was going on or why. The first target should have been broadcasting facilities - they failed to give the impression of being in charge, or to get the proles to back them.

So, what now for Erdoğan? He has to either fold or double down. I'm pretty sure I know which one it will be.

News 24 was quite amusing, 2 newsreaders at one point, trying to fill. No idea about anything that was going on.

Then I went back to playing Skyrim, and listened to Radio Five Live, who had a master plan. Do the same, but sound confident.
