Didn't Theresa May just fly up to meet her?

Huh, my mistake, they did hold a gun to some news tart's head. The revolution was televised, but they still made a cack-handed job of it.

They needed to have a new Dear Leader ready to step in, and put his (or her, I suppose) face everywhere.

I'll be available for consultation next time.

This is one coup we should be supporting. The 'coupists' want a secular democracy...

It isn't as simple as that though.

Yes the failed coup was over the state becoming less and less secular, but it would be argued that the people of Turkey quite strongly elected a conservative Muslim leader. The country is becoming less secular by the will of the people.

Is secularism more important than democracy?

So it is being claimed, I'm not a fan but that guy was "democratically" elected apparently.

Check out the coup history of Turkey.

The first things they took were:
- Head of the armed forces
- News broadcaster
- Two bridges in Istanbul
- Ataturk Airport

After they lost control of the first news broadcaster they took a different one instead (CNN-Turk).

Their target list was very good that's why it looked so impressive. The problem they had was that it was just a facade, it was quickly apparent to those in power (but not to the rest of us) that there weren't more than a few hundred of them, they were heavily outnumbered by police at all locations. Later they were swamped by counter-protesters and forced to surrender the airport and the central square. Why a facade? A few hundred troops with very little ammo (a couple mags each max), possibly 10 or 15 armoured vehicles/tanks/IFVs, 2 helicopters and today for a short period a Frigate are limit in what they can do for more than a few hours.

Yeah right. Something doesn't add up here, who was in control of the fighter planes ?

Heavily armed? Not really. Most were conscripts with a G3 rifles and 2 spare mags, So that's about 60 bullets. They're not exactly top line assault troops. They were also reluctant to shoot the civilians and couldn't have killed that many anyway as they didn't have nearly enough bullets. They could have just run them all down with a tank but I don't think that would help get the people on side. The police massively outnumbered the rebel troops, there only seemed to be a few hundred on the streets, there were probably ten times as many cops on the streets in Ankara or Istanbul.

This should have been timed with a protest for better human rights, then they would have had tens of thousands of civilians on the streets with them.

The rebels may have had one or two fighters but its unclear. They definitely had two helicopter gunships as they used them on the intelligence HQ and police special forces HQ. I suspect the fighters were actually government controlled and being used to warn the helicopters and attack rebel controlled tanks.

Interesting article https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-purge-begins-in-turkey?mbid=social_facebook

We really are in historic times, you are watching live the culmination of years of work bearing fruit to relieve a country of its illusion of democracy and install a theocratic dictator.

What to watch, the western secular reaction.

I've seen reports that some of the soldiers had no idea they were in a coup, and were just told it was a training exercise.

Would not be surprised if this whole thing wasn't organised as a way of purging the last of his opponents. Even if it wasn't organised by him, he'll be using to get rid of them anyway. Either way there will be no democracy there now.

It's a 100 flowers type/Stalinist purge campaign.

Whereby they stir up some trouble in order to lure out the 'bad' elements.

The biggest stink is the F-16s piloted by the rebels. In a coup you want to eliminate the old leadership. The F16s had a lock on Edrogan's jet for over an hour. There is bewilderment as to why he wasn't shot down.

They certainly have the capacity shooting down a SU24 recently.

In the 15 months prior to the coup attempt 1845 journalists, writers etc. have been jailed for 'insulting" the president!

Erdowank, himself, was jailed for 10 months in 1998 for inciting religious intolerance!

Erdowank Jan 2016:-

Quote:
“Asked on his return from a visit to Saudi Arabia late on Thursday whether an executive presidential system was possible while maintaining the unitary structure of the state, he said: “There are already examples in the world. You can see it when you look at Hitler’s Germany. There are later examples in various other countries,” he told reporters, according to a recording broadcast by the Dogan news agency.”

Nothing to see here, democracy at its finest! Rolling Eyes
