I bought a bag of dried butter beans and soaked them over night, rinsed them then boiled them for ten minutes, as per instructions on the pack. They were still really firm though compared with butter beans bought in a can. Is this how they are meant to be or do i need to be boiling them or soaking them even longer?

Cheers fellow gourmands.

Nah you are better boiling them up a bit longer, half an hour or so.
When I make Wub pasta fagioli Wub they tend to get a bit extra cooking time than that, even - cos they're in the "soup" itself as well and are supposed to be a bit mushy to make the soup thicken.

Yes, I ended up boiling them for half an hour. Then put them in Thu great tomato, butter bean and onion with oregano sort of stew thing I saw on Saturday kitchen. Its good.

1. Soak 100g butter beans in water with a little salt for at least 12 hours.
2. Drain.
3. Put soaked butter beans into a steel (not non-stick) saucepan.
4. Mash the butter beans with a potato masher until smooth, or the masher is ruined.
5. Tip the contents of the saucepan into the bin.
6. Order a pizza.

That certainly does sound a bit like a variation of pasta fagioli.
Therefore: worth attempting/expermenting with the beans till they are cooked right.
(I use less tomato, it should be more like a bean and pasta soup with bits of tomato in, rather than tomato-based dish)

Do people actually eat butter beans voluntarily? My only knowledge of them was from primary school where we seemed to have them with everything. They were, to my tender taste buds, bitter in taste and floury in texture.

Should I try some now I'm a grown-up? Am I missing out on anything good?

Like most (not all!) beans, they don't have a particularly strong taste, so they're all about the sauce. IMO best used in Italian style cooking.

Do you like baked beans? While eating them do you wish they were bigger, claggier and blander? Yes? Then try butter beans. Otherwise, just be thankful you live in a world where food is something to enjoy rather than a constant quest for survival, and order a pizza.
