I'm getting a fair amount of discomfort lately using my regular mouse at work. Does anyone use one of these upright mice? Worth getting or do they not help much?
This sort of thing

I've bought two at work a few years ago for people suffering problems with their wrists/hands and it helped both of them, they were both doing mega amounts of typing/drafting. They both switched back to ordinary mice after a few months as their problems got better.

The type I got had a range of parts you could swap about to get the best fit for your hand.

Certainly they are useful for some people, the problem is getting the wrong product can make things worse. Do you have an occupational heath officer? If not try talking to your GP first.

Used on of them years ago when I spent a unhealthy amount of time on PC at home.
Worked a treat.

I've been using the Anker one for 2 years, that looks the same as mine but the newer model. It completely eliminated the wrist pain i was getting so definitely worth a go. Would recomend.

Yes, I used one after I pulled a muscle in my upper arm and then had tightness and discomfort in my forearm when using a normal mouse. It was brilliant. Stopped using it after 4 years as the scroll wheel went funny and I never got around to replacing it.

Yeah I had one for a while. I didn't have any kind of RSI problems but it was okay once you got used to it.

Kept people off my computer, too.
You know that annoying thing people do when they want to stand over you and do something with your mouse while you sit there, cos they think they know better than you how to do your job?

That mouse puts them right off Cool Thumbs Up

Cheap and decent quality. Definitely the way to go and it avoids scratching whatever surface you are using.

Also means you can use it on the arm of a recliner for ultimate slobbishness.

Not the exact same issue but i do a lot of photoshop work and lightroom which is the same button combinations so i bought a logitech g13 and have replaced these multi key strokes with one key press, i cannot work without the g13 now. I was getting shooting pains in my fingers on left hand RSI.

Partially. I can't get on with thumb-balls, I prefer a good fingering.

Sadly, the sublime Microsoft Trackball Explorer is long out of production and used examples are commanding $illy monie$ now, but Logitech... oh FFS, the Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman is also out of production. Brick Wall

Well, Kensington still do some half-arsed substitutes that might be workable.

Can you actually work with any sort of speed/precision with the trackballs? I imagine they would be like using the trackpad on a laptop, usable sure but certainly worse than a mouse.

I used one when I used to do a lot of repetitive work (copying graphs from excel into reports for instance). It was only a cheapy but much more comfortable to work with, just pissed off everyone else in the office who ever used my machine.

They take a couple of days of getting used to but they are better for most things IMO. A lot of people who work with CAD stuff use them all the time. A lot are programmable.

A lot of people try them for 5 minutes and decide they don't like them.

I was getting really bad RSI from gaming shit loads a while back.

Bought the Logitech Performance MX, within a couple of weeks all was fixed.

An updated version has been released.
Logitech Performance Mx Master.

https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/mx-master?crid=7

Has a slightly higher arch, I've tried it out a few times and it does feel very comfy.

Bought quite a few of the Evoluent vertical rodents for folks with pains and they work well. Pricey though.

Cheers guys. I'm going to have a look at the trackballs, if I can feasibly use one at the same speed as a conventional mouse then it might be the way to go.

You can, if you get the right one - there's a reason that some used trackballs sell for triple digits.

But if you get a chance, try before you buy. I adore my MS Explorers, but couldn't get on at all with the similar Logitech Trackman.

I like the flywheel scrolly wheel on them, battery in the mouse seems crap though

*** Dips Oar into no business of mine***

Chairs are one of the major factors in orthopaedic issues.

Posture.

If your chair isn't adjusted or suited to the 'work surface' then the knock on effects are back, neck, shoulder, arm, bla bla bla.

You could jack the seat up or use a big cushion under your arse to see if it helps.

You could swap the mouse but risk masking the core issue.

***Oar out***

I've always had ridiculous contorted positions whilst computing and so far it's seemed to stave off discomfort.

Perching on the chair, legs on the desk, kneeling, that sort of thing. Adjustable desk was helpful in my last office job.

Doesn't help if you're suited and booted for a finance firm. Use the cash to buy new wrists later.

At the moment I have some sort of Logitech wireless mouse for which I've forgotten the brand. Laser mouse. Pretty good piece of kit. Lately I'm coming to think a 5 quid Anker is probably 90% of the way, though.

I do have some killer Chinese knock-off mechanical keyboards with blinkenlights which appeal to my inner ricer.
