Accessing public WiFi

If when your out an about do you ever connect onto public wifi connections or avoid em like the plague?

An if you do connect to em, do you use a VPN?

I'll do it, but I won't do internet banking or things like that when using them. I don't really see the danger otherwise.

I connect everywhere I can because cheapskate. Airports, restaurants, supermarkets anywhere I can get on for free.
I use free wifi so much that I don't have a data plan on my contract at all. My local high street has a half dozen
eateries that I use often, and as I walk down the street my phone auto latches onto the nearest one and I can
whatsapp and google at my leisure for freeeeeeeeeeeeee. I use a dormant email addy for anything requiring
a sign up. Airports in particular seem keen on taking an email addy for some reason?
I also use a free security app on my phone that among other things scans wifi networks.

I have a VPN running on my home machine to connect back to. Then again, I barely use public wifi as I can tether to the phone.

My favourite bit is the ones that ask for personal details, you know, in case you download 64TB of kinder eggs.

I connect to them if I need to get online. Check emails or general stuff to pass the time.

I won't do anything sensitive however, but if I needed to I would most likely just chance it, or use a VPN or some such.

Too many apps are shite at keeping private stuff private. Some don't use https so end up posting in the clear. Same for shitty mail servers that don't use any encryption either.

Up to you but I wouldn't trust any 3rd party AP.

I mainly use 3G, but at work everyone uses a nearby hotels WiFi. The few times I've needed WiFi I've driven to outside a hotel or used McDonalds. I don't do banking stuff etc. but I think if they're legitimate hotspots there isn't much risk, just be careful you're not connecting to some random network*

* done this as well, years ago my dad didn't have WiFi but one of his neighbours had an unprotected network

Neighbours open wifi is fun.

You can print stuff on their printer saying "Help me, I'm trapped in here".

I dont bother as they tend to be slow as fcuk.

Often get 70Mbps on 4G so I often find myself turning wifi off when I'm out of the house.
