I am looking to replace my 1999 Honda XL1000 Varadero with a newer version Honda XL1000 Varadero (2005 model).
My old XL1000 has twin carbs and the new one has fuel injection.
The question is will having FI make the riding any smoother at low speed (round town) ?
Also has anyone got any comparriosons on FI versus carbs on this bike ?
Much looking forward to your replies.

I only had the injected model (2005) and it was definitely not smooth at low speeds, to the point where I would groan when I saw traffic queues and had to filter. It also had the habit of cutting out as you went to pull away or were slowing down when the engine was hot.

I tried balancing the injectors, turns out they were spot on.

In the end I bought a power commander and plugged it in with no further tuning or any other work and it transformed the bike. Suddenly it was creamy smooth at low speeds and the cutting out problem never occurred again in the next 14,000 miles.

How easy was it to fit the power commander ?

I test rided a CBF 1000 (4 cylinders) and this was defiantly smooth but did not have the same ride feel as the varedero.

The only thing I dont like about the V twin is the clunkyness at low speeds.

The only difficult part was pulling the two plugs to the CDI apart to fit the power commander between them. The plug was in a tight v of the frame and hard to grab easily. That was all there was to it though apart from a lead to the battery. The power commander itself just sits under the seat in a weather proof case held by a velcro pad.

I also have the 2005 model of Honda. Complains are the same as yours and i think Honda should make a move on problems that we are encountering on their stuffs. Good image is not enough but performance.

I have the 2005 model too. Just done 64k on the bike and had it from new. Yes the bike was lumpy and cut out on occasions, cut outs down to riding style in my view and I changed mine slightly. Hasn't really coughed in the last 30k miles.

The bug bear that I have is the middle exhaust gasket. Get used to changing it every 2 or so years.

Other than that it is a brilliant bike and would have another one tomorrow (unless I could afford the new Africa Twin).

Power commanders need a map otherwise they do not do anything...

Let me rephrase, it plugged in with the standard Varadero map as supplied and no further tuning or alteration was carried out.

My current bike runs super smooth at all revs, so proof it can be done if they wanted to.

The smoothest bike I ever had at low revs was my Africa Twin when the chokes were blanked off.
