right, i want to put together a cleaning tank type thing, so i can dump components in it, and clean them off properly, dry them, and re-grease them to a decent standard, without just putting grease over the top of crap and grit etc

reason for this is, spray degreasers are bloody expensive for how easy it is to get through a can, and brush on stuff like "gunk" i'm not a fan of, and is also fairly expensive

i was hoping there was some kind of soluable degreaser stuff that you could add to water, to get large quantities i.e. a washing up basin full, for not a huge amount of outlay

done a bit of looking around, but not much success i was thinking it might not be too readily availible to joe public, any idea? or am i just talking crap Razz

any thoughts appreciated

We used to get degreaser from a chemical firm, as you say it's one of those you add to water. I'm trying to remember where we got it from.

What about asking at your local motorfactors, they may well be able to come up with some.

Isnt that Autoglym bike cleaner product, a soluble degreaser?

Its not very industrial though (strong)...

Dont quote me on that though, as i'm not sure if it will be (strong) enough for your purposes.

Just use mineral spirits.. also known as paint thinner (NOT laquer thinner). Dunno what it costs in the UK buy it's about $2.00 for 2.5 gallons here in the former colonies.
Let the stuff soak & then brush it if it needs it & then rinse in warm soapy water to remove the mineral spirits... sorted

If you're going to remove grease using a water based "solvent" then I doubt you'll find an effective one that is added to water. Water soluble degreasers work by forming an emulsion, the "solvent" molecules attaching themselves to both the grease molecules and the water molecules. Therefore all the decent ones work best when directly sprayed onto the grease first. I have found both the Autoglym and Muck Off degreasers to work well if thoroughly brushed on and then rinsed using really hot water.

Bear in mind that in most parts of the UK it's illegal to wash oil / grease and solvents into the sewers, i.e. getting rid of the resulting crap isn't always easy if done legally.

Ordinary petrol will shift grease no problem, but that comes with its own problems, e.g. highly flammable, knackers most rubber parts, etc.

Picture this: My sprocket housing where the small sprocket sits is absolutely COVERED in what looks like over a centimeter of cack!!!
Picture it as horrible sticky horrible mud that once on your fingers will never come off!!!!

Any super strong degreaser would be a fantastic help to me too Thumbs Up Smile .
