I was born in Botswana.
My parents rode their motorbike from the UK there in the 70s before I was born.
Always wanted to replicate the trip - well, accepting a rather different route might be needed.
An XT660 wouldn't be my choice - but then my parents chose an overly heavy and underpowered bike to do the trip on too (a detuned BMW R60/6).
So 1; sure.

2; sure, too. But, here we perhaps have a problem.
After some gentle greenlaning for my first ride, my second ride on my brand new KTM690 enduro was competing in a hare and hounds (first off road competition I'd done). I dropped it a good few times, as you might expect - very, very wet day that day.
So I suspect you perhaps would rather I treated it as if it WASN'T my own.

And for that worry, sadly I'm out!

Must say Botswana still a great place to be! Must have been much more demanding in the 70's ! But in our era there is different danger again which werent there in the 70's! Keep well and thanks for the reply

An XT660 is a good bike for the trip.

I suspect you'd have to transfer title to the riders as they'd struggle to clear customs in most places. This could be a big issue as you'll need a carnet for some places and certainly Eypt, or deposit 500% of the bikes value with the local customs agent to collect on your way out.

I think they'd need to be flown part of the way too, as there's no clear/safe route. Libya is probably a no-go, as is Sudan/South Sudan depending on whether the north has decided to kick up a fuss at that particular time of year.

Perhaps HUBB forums might be a good place to look (if you haven't already posted there). There are usually people on there wanting to borrow or buy bikes for trips like this.
