I'm looking for my next bike. I like big old "muscle bikes" as people are calling them. It's what I grew up looking at on my walls as a kid, so I suppose it's what I prefer now.

My preference is the ZRX1100/1200, but a look on Fleabay shows them to be considerably more expensive than the XJR1300's. Insurance is surprisingly cheap on the XJ as well.

Has anyone got/had one? What do I need to look out for? Alternatives I've missed?

Although I didn't own one, when I was in the market for this genre of bike, I test rode an XJR1300. It was comfy, full of torque and handled reasonably well for its weight. Some people feel these bikes are lardy, but I felt that it held its weight quite well. For me though, the Honda CB1300 just had the edge.

It may be worth checking out the Honda. At the very least test ride one Thumbs Up

I agree with that. The GSX1400 was the lardy one. The CB was a big bike that felt less big. The XJR was definitely the prettier one, though.

I agree with you there Arry, the air/oil cooled XJR definitely looked more radiant sporting a small oil cooler rather than a radiator. I did the usual and put a chrome radiator cover on my CB1300 to make amends.

Can't tell you much about the XJR in that guise but I had 3 FJ1200's which were the XJR engine in a 'sportier' frame and a wonderful engine it was.

I never had engine issues with any of those bikes and would presume the reliability has continued into the XJR series.

I've ridden a ZRX 1200 but can't say I really took to it. Prefer the looks of the XJR as well.

The XJR is nice but I'd go GSX because it's easier to tune (and none of them are anything like quick enough out of the box). I nearly bought one but when it came to it I couldn't live with a steel frame on a bike of that size and power.

Cheers for the responses so far.

I'll look at the CBR, and had already discounted the GSX for being an oil tanker on wheels.

As long as it hasn't got huge mechanical issues, I'll be seeing if I can snag one with cosmetic issues cheaply. I only care about looks if I'm flogging it.

I wouldn't just discount the GSX - it has a place.

They were all good bikes in their own right, for what they're built for; it's just the CB is the slightly more 'dynamic' of the bunch.

I test rode a CB1300 a few months back.. Every other bike I've ridden since has been measured against it.

Definitely on my shortlist, getting hard to find good ones though.

Colwyn Bay bikes has an '06 in blue, wasn't on the website last time I looked. £3K IIRC.

The XJR/FJ lump is practically immortal and being aircooled and shim over bucket eases maintenance. The FJ club can do the engine servicing for yu quite cheaply.

Handling on mine was slow, but stable as befitting its style. Bit heavy off the stand but fine once rolling. The brakes are the usual good blue spot sumitomos.

If you fancy tuning/derestricting the first move is to swap the XJR1300 inlet rubbers for FJ1200 items. Despite what you will hear elsewhere, the FJ11/12 and all XJRs run the same cams. The motor is plenty strong stock however.
