Thread is nothing more than an opportunity for me to gloat vicariously as the captain of the Spamalittle clan (who also answers to “dad”) passed his mod 2 last week, two weeks before he turns a spritely 70 years old.

He passed mod 1 second time around after booting a cone on the swerve during his first attempt. Passed mod 2 first time with a hitherto undetermined number of minors (he won’t let me see his score sheet).

Seems he’ll be running around on my old SV for a bit but he’s after something more “commensurate with his age”. So that’ll be a sixties Triumph then.

Shout if anyone fancies a 2007 CG125. Condition largely unknown as it’s never been washed since I’ve known it (so all I’ll warrant is that it’s bike shaped) and tastefully personalised with measurement scribbles from where the old man was building his garage and couldn’t find a scrap of wood/paper to write on.

Worra legend Thumbs Up

60's Triumphs are great, interesting fun to ride and real head turners. However I really wouldn't recommend one, especially to a 70 year old. Kicking them over can be really hard work, as well as that the brakes are SHIT, not something I'd want a novice rider using. On top of that they are ridiculously over priced. Reasonable bikes are £5k+ for that money you can get a newer one which will be better in almost every way Brakes/suspension/power/economy/reliability. The only reason to go for an older one is because they are cooler and hold their money better.

I quite agree. Suspect dad has likely considered the [many] disadvantages of a classic bike, especially after training on an MT07, but it's likely he'll get one anyway just for fettling and the occasional run. Think I've got him to come round on the benefits of 'modern' advances such as disc brakes so he'll probably get a day-to-day as well. Bit greedy as he's already got a '55 AJS pissing oil all over my garage and a '64 tiger cub restoration. He's always loved bikes but never bothered to get his licence until now.

Not my bike to sell really, but its an 07 with about 14k on the clock. Think he'll probably look for what he paid for it, about £900, but 750 is probably more realistic. It's in reasonable nick, but certainly not pristine. If anyone is serious about making an offer let me know and I'll take some pics (and get permission to flog it!)

Congrats on passing Smile

I would also say think carefully about that old Triumph. I recently got back into biking after a 23 year gap and my first thought was "get a bonnie" or a Tiger-cub, BSA C15, BSA road rocket etc but then when I looked at the prices and thought about what I would be buying...

Sure enough the old Triumphs etc look/sound cool but as chris-red above points out with a 60,s bike you are buying a machine with poor brakes, questionable reliability, hard work starting/kicking. After some common sense kiked-in I ended up getting an old £1300 ZZR600 E11 for a fraction of the price a 60's bike would have cost.

While the ZZR would not have been my first choice I have to admit as motorcycles go its pretty good and when compared to a 60's Bonnie it wins hands down. The ZZR has brakes that will stop me, starting at the push of a button, no "drip-dry" engine and is fully oil-tight. Not nearly as cool as a 60's Triumph but much more practical on todays chaotic roads.

Dad could allways get an old Triumph as a second "fixer-upper" bike?

Safe motoring.

Another well done from me,

If he's after a bike he can fettle with that's in keeping with the style of bike he likes then what about a recent Royal Enfield?

Has disk brake up front (GT has front and rear) electric start and lots of spares and upgrades available from Hitchcocks
