Been thinking about buying a push bike. They've changed an awful lot since I bough my Carlton Pro Am in 1982! I haven't ridden it for years and it is a bit knackered. I'm not so knackered. I like the look of the Cube Cross Race but the frame welds look a bit rough, are they ok?

On bikes like Raleighs and Boardmans, what is a smooth weld? Is it just a cover for something nastier underneath, or a proper weld itself?

Would you buy a bicycle via Mail order?

Your carlton pro-am is steel and is brazed together into lugged sleeves, not welded.

The cross race is aluminium and welded. Aluminium welding has a scalloped appearance.

That's a great answer, thanks. You can see why I looked at the welds on some new bikes and thought they were ugly. Now I know they're supposed to be like that. Cheers.

I think a lot of steel framed bikes are actually brazed.
