Noticed talk of guitars on another thread and was wondering…
What instruments do you all play? Very Happy

I’m great with a recorder or tin whistle. I have a 4ft Clarsach harp that I play really badly and have strummed and picked guitars since I was 9. I play them all by ear (or tab) and recently decided to try and learn to read proper music and got a full size digital piano. I’m having great fun making a hell of a racket – but don’t think I’ll ever master it. The reading music isn’t going too well either and I resort to playing by ear.

I used to play bass guitar, until I realised that nobody wants to finger a bassist. True, sad story.

Sax and cello are the 2 I'd love to be able to play. I think I probably smoke too much to be able to blast down a sax.

And I'm put off attempting a cello, from listening to one of my boys attempting a violin. I think bowed instruments are the most painful to hear a newbie trying to master. I considered a silent one - but music shop said they aren't really anything like the real thing. Crying or Very sad

Electric and acoustic guitars, and used to dabble a bit with Mandolin. I've also had some success playing racked harmonica with acoustic guitar, but never really stuck with it. Bob Dylan I ain't. Mind you, he's shit on harmonica. Mind you, that doesn't say much about my playing Thinking

I’m so jealous. Jacqueline du Pre playing Elgar concerto. I’m not a hairy beast – but that raises every hair on my body and gives me shivers. I was going to say if you can play that, I’m gate-crashing to listen as I’ve never heard it live. But I clicked on your profile.
Shocked Don’t think my YBR is up to that. Laughing

I'd finger you if you can play the chain.

I sort of play the keyboard, in that I can't read music, and have no real knowledge of chords etc. but technology makes up for this Smile

Guitar & bass guitar, dabbling in drums and keyboard.
Can cover some floyd, led zep, Radiohead to a recognisable level.

Mostly by ear, although learned a few bars of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata from YouTube but gave up when it got too tough.

Forgotten all about sheet music after playing violin badly at age 8! Almost as bad as my singing.

My neighbours had Laughing

Piano I can play anything except Rachmaninov as he had massive hands. Everybody says my tempo is terrible. I tell them I always play rubato Laughing

Bag pipes (but I only know three pieces)

Alto Sax (limited pieces).

Guitar but only via tapping.

I can pick up most instruments and work out what to put where to get a vaguely recognisable tune. But I don’t have the artistic talent to be able to create my own music. It’s a skill I greatly envy.

Quote:

I’ve learned that I don’t have the right hands for piano. I have short stubby fingers that just won’t do what the Youtube tutorials tell me to do.

Bag pipes

I have a neighbour with a love of these…

Have you ever tried Uilleann Pipes? I personally think they have a nicer sound. I don’t know enough about them though, to know if it’s the same sort of thing or a completely different instrument.

None to any great level of accomplishment but started playing guitar at 18 which put me in that band environment,
but if I'm honest I always wanted to play drums, mum and dad weren't having that so guitar it was.

Once I'd bought my first house I bought a cheap drum kit and have been trying to break that with sticks ever since.
I don't pick up guitar nearly as often as i should, but a friend wants to have another go at learning to play and is
on the case acquiring a guitar, I'll get back into making a racket with that when he does. I'm very rusty but bought
some nice guitars back in the day so at least I'll be starting again with decent equipment...

Seen this guy live on stage, hilariarse. Thumbs Up The bit where he stuck a straw up his arse and fired a dart
across the stage to burst a balloon 20 feet away had me in fits of laughter. My mate Dave can also fart at will
like that but he lacks Mr methanes control.

I play guitar and sing, I do a weekly gig, at the local Kafeneion, when I'm in Cyprus.
Eric Clapton I am not!

My Dad keeps threatening to give me his bass, haven't taken up the offer as yet, I might give it a go.

I played the cornet, in a brass band, for years, although I haven't done so for a long time!
Although I can read music because I learned on a monophonic instrument, Cornet/Trumpet, I have very little grasp of music theory, as far as chords are concerned, I suppose I should learn but I CBA at the moment.
My other downfall is I can't memorise the chords or words to songs, so I need the lyrics and chords in front of me when I'm playing and singing!

I have the same little Marshal amp with which I use my cheap guitar to practice chord changes, slowly, with my tounge out.
Having a friend who's extremely good and very patient is helping.
