With hindsight the Allies should have left the Nazis and Soviets duke it out and steam-rollered over whomever was left. Coming over all moral high ground in WW2 just led to many, many millions more dying in the Cold War Sad

I was just answering Chikenstrips straightforward question on how i was introduced to politics. Why i mention my grandmother is because she was born in 1906, her perspective was way ahead of your twenty year old wokest who thinks they invented being conscious about race issues or re-examining historical tropes such as Winston Churchills hero status. She did refer to black people as darkies though but she despised the National Front and was appalled when i bought a black shirt when it became fashionable during the new wave.

Did you know Churchill actually wanted to keep going to Moscow but knew there would have been no stomach for it in the British or American public.

It wasn't in of itself but there was a character in it who was a blacked up white actor.

Churchill's life has been examined ad nauseam. There is nothing new to say there, good, bad or otherwise, unless new evidence or documentation from the period is unearthed. Have you found something new?
I have yet to learn about someone who is perfect. Do you know of such a figure?

This would have been after Dunkirk, North African... the waltz across Europe to get to Berlin was no picnic - Bridge Too Far and all that - poor timing. The Nazis lost the war before 1939, why not wait for it all to implode instead Smile

As to It Ain't 'Arf Hot Mum there were some racial stereotypes. A hanging offense now apparently Neutral The "blacked up" actor was actually Indian... just white indian, like Cliff Richard. It's the same deal as straight ppl playing queers being frowned upon or Idris Elba not really being Black enough to play a black man Rolling Eyes

I seem to recall the bloke was born in India, had a natural tan and spoke Hindi and Urdu better than the two other Indian actors.

The irony was the character in question was the most "British" of them all as in he appreciated what the Empire was about rather than taking it for granted like the other characters, always exclaiming "I'm not some damn native!"

It's a bit like the [former] nationality project of the US: come over and instead of being Asian you'll be Asian American. It was obviously far to successful at racial cohesion so had to be dismantled much the same as the Empire after WW2. Sun's out, where's my pith helmet?

Half the problem with immigration in my view is that the immigrants and their children don't regard themselves a British, but British Indians or British Asians or whatever. News channels encourage it by using the terms Asian communities or Muslim communities as though this makes some sort of difference on how they are to be treated.

There's no integration and very little assimilation but it's all too late to change anything now. We have ethnic neighbourhoods (ghettos) in most cities and in some cases whole towns where English is a second language.

I'm really interested to see the 2021 census results and compare them with the 2011 figures. I suspect they will be quite mind blowing.

Not specifically BLM but given its links to Critical Race Theory and - well - outright stupidity, it's probably best in here:

Quote:
An academic is suing Leeds Beckett University after she was dropped from her advisory role over tweets calling a mixed-race man a “house negro”, alleging the decision was discriminatory because of her belief in critical race theory and Black radicalism.

The university ended its association with the academic adviser Aysha Khanom after accusing her of “racist language” in relation to tweets using the terms “house negro” and “coconut” – the former in a question.

In what is believed to be the first case of its kind, Khanom is arguing that critical race theory and Black radicalism are protected beliefs under the Equality Act. Critical race theory says race is a social construct used to oppress people of colour and which begets systemic racism.

Nice! I like "he upset Twitter..." No, he upset Twitter's blue check marks, the World's self-appointed moral arbiters.

I see ITV is dragging up another documentary about Stephen Lawrence. Rolling Eyes

Yes it was bad, but it happened 20 or so years ago and many many more black youths have died in the meantime at the hands of people with knives.

If this is the only racial motivated killing of a black youth they can come up with, perhaps they should consider whether Britain is quite as racist as they (whoever they are) want us to think.

But hey, I must be getting to the overload stage because it's just becoming white noise. Oh, hold on, can I call it that anymore?

He does seem to get more than his fair share of coverage. It is odd how the media pick certain causes - think of him, Maddie McCann, Suzy Lamplugh to name three chosen for no explicable reason in preference to the thousands who have been killed or disappeared over the years. I used to think the media went for totty because the death of someone easy on the eye means more than the death of a tug, but perhaps not any more...
