Hi

I have a Honda Dylan SES125 that only yesterday stated to make a rattling sound when idling. I've done a bit of research and today having removed the drive belt cover I can confirm it is the drive belt flapping up and down when idle but I need a little help please to identify the extent of repairs now required and also where the best place to go and get parts from.

The bike has been regularly serviced and a back in May 2014 the rollers were replaced but I don't think the variator, clutch or belt has ever been replaced. Mileage currently about 15k and having recently moved house, most of my miles are now at 50-60mph.

I'll attach a couple of photos that show the inside of the cover caked in dust and the current positioning of the belt which I hope will help.

Thanks for any assistance Very Happy

Dan

Replace the black power band for a purple one. That'll sort it.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Do you mean just replace the belt with a purple one? You'll have to forgive me but I haven't got a clue what a purple one is!

I've heard orange ones are best for the street?

A green one, direct from Kawasaki, will improve acceleration.

I recommend using Cradley Kawasaki.

You'll have to excuse these cretins, they're just winding you up.

You want a red band (max powah!)

I'd choose red if i was going to track it, mainly because you find longer straights on a track.

For the road, like OP, I'd wanna be off the line and up to speed quicker, instead of having a higher top end.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll give cradley a call about a new belt.

Is there any indication I may need a new variator or clutch too or will the belt do the trick?

Hi.

Could be the contra-spring, could be the belt itself. Why were the rollers changed? Was it played with/tuned for more power and the rollers changed to get the gearing right?

Nothing exciting about this bike I'm afraid lol. It's been my commuter to the station for the past 9 years. Have had it regularly serviced and believe rollers were replaced as part of service schedule.

It seems to me (see pic) that the belt is rather slack. Is this what you mean by the contra Spring? That is there's not enough grip on the belt or the belt has stretched?

Sorry for all the questions. I would get a mechanic to sort it out but want to upgrade to a bigger bike soon, having got my 'A' license a few years back, and therefore want to keep costs down to a minimum with this repair Smile

my mate has a multi-coloured belt, which is best for acceleration and top speed as it works like a black one round town and then goes through all the colour's as the speed get higher upto high speed where it works like a red one

Right! So I found this local parts shop called The Chocolate Teapot and they even sell dictionaries without the word gullible in them. Coloured drive belts!!! Honestly Laughing

To be honest, it was believable as I've just had to buy a new purple hard drive for my cctv system as they are best for 24/7 use!!

Anyway, suffice to say, I went to the local honda dealer who had a belt (a black one!!) and roller set in stock (no dictionaries thankfully) which I'm going to try.

Cheers guys, I think it's fair to say you got me .. kind of Laughing

Well that makes a refreshing change from the standard baw-and-flounce exit.

Top marks, you'll do well round here.

I've had to invent a term for this, the 'anti-flounce'.

Well done, btw, most people get into right hissyfits whe they realise we've been taking the piss.

Tbh it was close. Wasn't getting much joy from local dealers either so frustration levels were rising!!

I was thinking how much more info could you possibly need and thought a coloured belt could be a possibility but a multi coloured belt .... Pure genius Laughing

Any ways, I plan to fit the new belt and rollers tomorrow so will let you know how I get on.

Cheers
Dan

Definitely best response to BCF trollin' I've seen.
I only hope the implication (or joke) that the belt stretching and needing replacing is true though, but I know little of Scootehys.

Well, on a proper bike, a rattle at tickover is the clutch.

Have no experience with variator bikes though.

I would be tempted to remove the belt and start it up and see if it makes a rattle.

Couldn't resist that one Laughing

And point taken Nobby, I need a proper bike ... but that's got to wait for now Sad

It's definitely the belt flapping on the top and bottom casing unfortunately. (I've got a video of it - can i upload that here?) The belt goes all irregular at idle and I'm pretty sure I can see the variator moving in and out slightly which I thought may be causing it. When I cleaned up the parts I noticed the variator surfaces were not completely regular, that is there are small smooth grooves on both sides which is making me think perhaps they need replacing.

That said, it could be that the clutch is not gripping the belt as much as it should but when it's idling it's not gripping and as soon as I apply a bit of throttle it grips and does its job.

To be honest, I haven't got a clue lol and I'm a bit pissed of that the belt and rollers didn't fix it. From what I can tell there's nothing odd about the old ones so that's £48 I'm down already.

I'm going to take both to a mechanic tomorrow.

Cheers,
Dan

If the belt is flapping about and there is no adjustment to tighten it, then the pulleys must be worn.

I take it the vibration goes away if you start it without a belt?
