My bikes going outside, as a result I want an Almax chain.

I aim to wrap the chain through the hole in my swingarm & round a land post or railing.

The chain will stay put and & not be transported anywhere.

So... Almax 3 or 4 & what length do you think is best?

Longest = heavier.

If you want it to go through swing arm and lamp post/railing you are best with the 2.5m series 4 it might be over kill but if it isn't being moved you don't need to worry about transporting it. I've got the 1.5m and it will just about go through two bike wheels. With a gap between them to stand.

My 16mm 2m Almax (IV I think...?) has been ideal. Goes through the gap in the ST4 to the Defiant anchor or a pole easy enough. 16mm means it'll go in my Givi tail pack easily but it does have to be braced well or it slips forward and pushes me into the tank... 😵

I'd go Pragmassis, on the basis that an Almax shill spammed BCF.

Never forget, never forgive.

I went for the IV 2m 18mm chain with Squire lock. I kinda wish I went a little longer as it goes through a ground anchor and just around my back wheel. Can't get it around the frame due to the fairing. Would be worth measuring your bike in-situ to see how long you need it Thumbs Up

Measure with some rope and add 20cm (or whatever) in compensation for the width of a chain.

Hmmm, I wasn't aware of that Mr Borg. Maybe there is some remorse on their end; I told them I was a BCF member and they did a free postage deal. 😋

I just got myself a 2.5m IV, I figured I can always wrap an extra loop around a post or wheel, but I can't stretch an extra 50cm if I need it.

I don't need to lug it anywhere mind, I'd have gone for a lighter chain if I did.

Nope outside, it'll stay locked to the railing or lamppost (whichever I decide my bike will be locked too).

But is a Pragamisis chain as good as an Almax? I'd rather forgive and higher the chances of my bike not being stolen if it came down to it. If they are equally as good, then that's widened my options.

Nope, would not do. Someone drops some superglue in the lock, fucked and will be back later.

Someone comes and crops (it can be done...) the link in the middle and replaced with a cable tie for easy steal later.

I wouldn't.

This lock superglue thing seems to come up time and time again. Surely if the lock gets superglued you just go and buy a new lock or dissolve the glue?

If it were me I'd appreciate the pre-warning so that I could stick the bike somewhere else for a bit (or sell it before it's gone).

Technically, someone could take a huge steaming shit and rub it underneath my car bonnet for a tasty surprise when it warms up, it hasn't happened yet thankfully.

Something I hadn't considered, but weighing up wether it's worth the effort of unlocking the chain and taking it up to the apartment every morning before leaving for work & vice versa is a bit of effort just to get access to a bike I'll be using daily, probably more than twice a day.

If someone does superglue the lock I'll just take it back to my mums garage until I source another chain.

In the unlikely event that someone snips a link & replaces it with a zip-tie, then unfortunately that's the risk I take by leaving it outside & at home in exchange for the convenience of having access to my bike every day for work/social use. I also hope I've reduced the chance of this happening massively by investing £££'s into a chunky Almax or Pragamisis 16mm or 19mm chain.

Thing is, what would you rather.

2 minutes of packing chain, even locking inside of building...

Or getting the bus Wink

I lock my chains in the car when I go to work, because no one likes shitty peugeots. But yeah, its your call Thumbs Up

As effortless as that sounds, at 8am in the morning when I'm still half a sleep, it'll feel like a big chore.

No car to lock chain inside of unfortunately, only option would be to lumber it into my letterbox (if it'll fit) or run it back upstairs...

And if we're taking the super safe approach to this, I could argue that my bike is now sat unlocked and vulnerable for 5mins while I run upstairs to put my chain away, every week day and at a specific time. A thief could clock onto that & grab that 5 minute window by the balls & run with it, literarily lol.

I don't see how that follows.

Locking a chain outside and having it glued or whatever whilst I'm out on the bike doesn't mean the bike gets stolen.

It means the chain is fucked. It means you also now know that someone wants the bike.

It seems on par with, I dunno, not leaving the garden shovel outside because someone might use it to break your windows and rob the house.

Wouldn't acetone work to dissolve the glue if they decided to do that?

So, you have a fucked chain and padlock. You are now inconvenienced and unsecure.

It is totally different, you are registering highly on my autistic radar since your return and my cunt filter is at max... don't test me child, we don't all ride little sheds. Laughing

To conclude...

Paddy made some insightful comments in good faith, in reality I'm too lazy to implement the actions needed to prevent such things happening.

So back on topic...

What length chain & which chain should I get lol?

You're literally riding around with a tank full of superglue dissolver (petrol), the glue lock thing is a non-issue.

The shortest that fits, the thickest that you want to pay for.

I'm guessing that an Almax chain would hold its' value fairly well anyway if you wanted to sell it on later.

Cool, so we're saying the 19mm Almax 4 (as it's cheaper than the 19mm Pragamsis I believe) with the recommended Squires padlock.

Use string to measure how much length I need, taking into considering the chain is a lot thicker than the string I'm using to measure of course.

Sorted? Or does anyone have any other suggestions/advise?

Someone can vandalise the chain if you leave it, though. Lock it to itself with a cheap padlock, bash up the lock until it's non functional, crop it as Paddy says, whatever.

I'm just not sure how that translates to less security, though. It's basically a canary for impending bike theft.

As long as it's attached to something immovable object, you're good!
