I've just got in after taking an Africa Twin out for 2.5 hours. I'm a little underwhelmed.

Got some repeatable vibration at 4.5k but only on the leftright hand side and especially noticeable with fingers resting on the top of the brake lever.

The suspension is great, streets ahead of the NC smoothing out crappy roads with no issues. Brakes to their job, feel is similar to the NC (although braking power etc obviously different). I happily did some progressive braking without a second thought. All felt natural a bit like a bigger, upscale NC. Stock exhaust has a nice note too. Seat height was good for me, on highest setting the balls of both feet on the ground. Didn't have my big boots on which add another inch or so, just summer boots.

Here's the thing, the Africa Twin has twice the horsepower of the NC and 30 more torques. It should feel like a rocket ship to me compared to the NC and it just did nothing for me. I know it's not a sports bike but I didn't expect to hit the rev limiter as much as I did either.

So what now? I can't be squishing up on a sports bike so, Tiger Sport? Tiger Explorer? Something totally unsuitable, CB1000R ? Z1000 ?

I has a sad now Crying or Very sad

edit: learn left from right

Always a bit sad when something like that doesn't live up to expectations.

How rusty were the spokes?

If power's what makes a bike exciting for you, then sure. Some bikes are dull, doesn't mean an equivalent bike will be as well.

Yeah, perhaps it had been built up so much, at least in my mind, and didn't live up to that.

3.5k miles on the clock and the spokes were fine, no signs of rust or anything. The rear grab handles did have paint scuffs, I suspect that's from everyone bashing their shins on them when mounting. The tail end is pretty high.

I have two choices

1) Trade/Sell the NC and buy a replacement that has a bit of protection for winter commutes but is also a bit of fun. I looked at the AT because it was like a boosted NC, which would have been ideal, just didn't light my fire. The Tigers seem like an equivalent bike to the AT.

2) Keep the NC and get a silly fun bike. It doesn't need to be a litre bike I'm just looking for options and I mentioned the CB1000R and Z1000 because they're polar opposites to the NC.

It's really a "what bike" thread that I didn't think I'd need to start.

First world problems, I know.

Good shout, will add those to the list to try.

Exciting power delivery is exactly what you don't want when halfway down a dirt road in sub-Saharan Africa. You want it smooth and predictable.

You are looking at the wrong bike.

Try a tiger 1150.

Africa is an expensive bike so world is your oyster budget wise. Just go test ride crazy and book one every weekend with a different dealer.

All current Honda bikes have a dull power delivery, even the 'blade. It doesn't surprise me that the AT isn't especially thrilling. It's not built particularly well either (rusty spokes and frame welds).

Are you going off road? If not, MT-10.

I ride 5 or 6 days a week, every week but own one bike... Any money that may be available to put towards a second bike goes on servicing the one I do have.

OP, if you want an adventure-ish upright bike with serious fun potential the above link to a Multistrada is a great suggestion. You wouldn't actually go adventuring in the desert but I don't think that's your intention is it? The way those things pick up is impressive, and they sound great!

You're either in a low paid job or your bike is particularly demanding.

For a do everything bike the MT09 tracer is pretty good, I saw one yesterday with sorted suspension (cartridge forks and a nitron shock) and wondered for a moment if I should have done the same.... Nah, the MT-10 will do for me.

If you want a bike that's the polar opposite of the NC then the MT-10 is about it, thirsty, impractical, fast, noisy, great handling after a setup and loads of fun.

Neither, there's like a cagillion other things to blow money on at Castella D'Nitro. Plus I didn't mean to imply I spend the worth of another motorcycle each time I service my bike, but the worth of a bike spread over X amount of time is X number of services/parts. Personally, at this point, my bike does everything I want a bike for.

Back to the OP, my dad had a KTM adventure 990 (they're of a higher capacity now)- that thing accelerated hard, and is sort of the style you're looking at. They sound pretty good too...

To me, a KTM or a Multistrada is second bike equipment. Wouldn't trust either as day to day commuter transport.
