Hey guys & girls,

I have been thinking for a while to get a 125cc scooter/moped and abit undecided on what to go for.

I have been looking at getting a Sinnis Harrier 125cc but haven't seen too many reviews on it and i don't know if that's a bad thing or?

- Could anyone recommend a reliable/reasonable priced scooter for a first time rider? Very Happy

Going to be using the scooter for commuting 30 minutes or so to work, riding to my girlfriends house and rides when im bored.

You usually can't go wrong with anything Japanese. What's your budget?

Have you done your CBT yet? It may well influence your choice of steed. If not, do it on a geared bike but ask them nicely at the end for a go around the training ground on one if their scooters. You may find the difference surprising...

Hey guys,

I have not done my CBT yet i was waiting to decide on a scooter first.

I am 27 years old and have just a provisional license. Parking was a nightmare where i live so scrapped the car idea.

A friend of mine recommended a geared bike. Honda CBR 125 but im unsure.. my budget ideally is around £1500-£1700 if the bike/scooter takes my fancy.

If you've got no interest in getting licensed up, and just want cheap transport then a scooter is fine. It'll make better use of its limited power than a 125 which will always be in the wrong gear.

Sinnis just rebadge Qingqi (and other) brand of cheap Chinese bikes and scooters. Some consider them disposable.

Even by scootay standards, the Harrier is anaemic with just a claimed 5.5kW. Fortunately, with a 5.5 litre tank you won't have to ride it for long between fill ups.

On the road, you're looking at over £1100. You turn the key, and it's worth £500, same as any other used off-brand scooter.

£1100 buys you a moderately used Honda PCX or Vision 110 (which still manages to make more claimed power than the Sinnis). It'll hold that value far longer.

Factor in the likely higher insurance on the Sinnis and that you'll get mugged on servicing costs if you decide to try and maintain the warranty, and your cheap scooter could quickly end up costing you more than a Honda.

Hmm you make a very good point..

Im just unsure on what to go for really. I'd happily pay more for a reliable scooter.

I do quite like the 'sporty look' of the Sinnis Harrier 125. So im ideally looking to go for something like that.

Any recommendations?

Oh lord.. not having much luck here am i haha..

Just really wanna get on the road and started!

If i were to get a motorbike i'd most probably go for the Honda CBR 125 but don't know how to go about getting the A1 license - as in the steps.

But i think a scooter would be best for what i need to do...

Scooters are for those who like feeling the wind in their mangina.

Get a cheap, used cg125.

You can ride it with just a CBT for 2 years.
Then you can decide if you want to get a full licence, or just re-sit the CBT again and ride for 2 more years.

Thumbs Up

Don't knock it.

The cg125 has provided many a BCFer with a great start into the world of biking.

Others to consider are the ybr125 and the clr125

Hmm..

Im just unsure on what route to take really...

I was originally thinking just doing the CBT getting a started scooter for 2 years then cracking on with the A1/A2 license then going for a motorbike.

Just want to get my 'wheel in the door' into the world of 2 wheeled life.

As i was saying previously, i was going to go for the Sinnis Harrier 125 but now im unsure..

Scooters are lame, and you will be bored pretty quickly.

If you are pondering the whole "A1/A2" thing, then why not get a geared bike first to see if you actually like riding a geared bike?

The three gilera /,piaggio scooters would be reliable if you don't buy from a chav

But they will cost more to insure as chav magnets

What are other options apart from the CG125?

Just dont like the look of it tbh!

And yeah... Andy i agree they definitely are chav magnets. The hood rats around my area are wizzing up and down with stupid exhausts on them.

Yes. Irrespective of what you do your CBT on, the resulting DL196 certificate will validates your provisionaL entitlement to ride anything up to 125cc and 11kW (and 0.1kW/kg), geared or otherwise, as long, as it's displaying L plates front and rear and you don't take a pillion or use motorways.

I'd encourage you to give a geared bike a try during or after your CBT. They're more involving and fun, although not necessarily more practical.

If you enjoy it, then you could consider skipping the 125 altogether and go straight on to training and direct access tests for your full A license. There's no need to wobble around essentially untrained on a 125 unless you particularly want to.

You don't need a A1 licence to ride a CBR 125, a CBT is fine so long as you display L plates front & rear

OK, so you're 27 and have a provisional licence, and want to ride on a CBT to get to your gf's house and commute 30 minutes to work. That's more information you've given out than you think. Reading between the lines, the decision is a recent one, to join the physical, material world that previously didn't interest you at all, or which you even held in contempt. But you want to do it fast (interested in the big boy's bike looks of a CBR, and want to get on the road immediately on a CBT rather than get a full licence). Stop/slow down. She isn't worth rushing headlong into the unknown. Take a few more weeks of the bus or train. It's worked so far, hasn't it? In the meantime use that money to get lessons and pass your full category A test.

What CaNsA meant to say in the new loving, caring, sharing BCF was...

JimmyWray89 wrote:

Our licensing scheme is confusing.

An "A1" bike is up to 125cc, 11kW and 0.1kW/kg. Sound familiar? It's exactly the same list as what you can ride on your provisionaL entitlement after doing a CBT.

Why would you get an A1 license, I hear you ask? Generally, you wouldn't. You need a proper license if you want to remove the L plates, use a motorway, or take a pillion.

In your case, I'd forget about A1, and definitely about A2.

Really all you need to know is:

CBT Arrow ride any "A1" bike up to 125cc on L plates (and not on a motorway, or with a pillion).

Pass motorcycle theory + module 1 and module 2 practical tests on a 595cc+ 40kW+ "A" bike Arrow get a full "A" license and ride anything you want, anywhere you want, with pillion candy gushing on the back.
