So we have a garden, it's 10 foot wide and about 40 foot in length, directly at the back of house (in perfect oblong shape). Currently all grass, minus a bit of paving (at either end) and a rotting small shed.

Wife wants to get half the garden with decking (the back half, which catches the sun from mid-morning to late afternoon), and I will be having a shed there too backing onto the rear fence, at the opposite end to the house.

Approx shed dimensions wanted are 10ft (to fit the width) by about 8ft (from back fence coming into the garden).

My question to you lot, is what would be your recommendations for shed type / build / material etc? I'm wanting it to house tools, storage for bits and pieces + include some kind of work bench for little projects. Also to house a bicycle perhaps.

We'll most likely replace whatever grass is left with astro-turf so no lawn-mower needed.

We would also most likely put down a solid (concrete) base, so that wouldn't be too hard (father in law and brother in law are builders). Probably build shed first and then put the decking around it.

Recommendations please?

Wife likes look of this type of thing, for example:

https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/13532878_10154359352339885_509341750565407905_n.jpg?oh=bc6b533b269bd864dda7efb5d744d2f4&oe=577074CD

Or perhaps this 'vinyl shed' with steel frame on Amazon

https://www.parts-and-tools.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Woodside-10-x-8-Vinyl-Storage-shed-with-Foundation-and-three-fixed-windows-0-1.jpg

With storage inside along lines of:

https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/13528692_10154359352294885_4154270822441554259_n.jpg?oh=f2e31bb6a3d297c2c306e1d5879d2f9d&oe=57707226

Wood is definitely an option, but looking fairly expensive. I'm not that interested in building from scratch but happy to buy a pre-made + put together type thing if it's decent price.

Is plastic worth looking into? Or just build a brick-based type thing?

We're probably looking to spend up to a maximum of £1,500, if that helps.

Security shouldn't be too much of an issue - fairly safe area and hidden away in cul-de-sac.

Many thanks in advance Thumbs Up

tbh.. have a look on Ebay for contacts
there are many companies that will bespoke make you a shed/workshop and deliver/assemble it, subject you having put a foundation of slabs or similar down.
10x8 isn't big so should be easy to do under budget.

I would also look at getting it supplied with leccy for lights and power tools and the obligatory kettle

I know you don't want to but you could build a lot of shed from scratch for that money, I've always bought prefab sheds, they're alright but my dad built one using 2x2 timber and shiplap and its superb. Put a pitched roof on it, polycarbonate for glass.

We're looking at sheds and ebay seems to turn up plenty of good looking results - we're after a 14x12 and they come in at about £1K delivered and assembled.

They look far better than any B&Q or local garden centre shed I've seen.

What are you wanting to keep in it?

I have a 15' x 10', and find that I don't have enough room for everything I want in it Embarassed

One thing I would say, I have the 15' x 10' in wood, and some of the T&G has shrunk now, so have a few gaps that I need to replace ( Rolling Eyes ), and it is a pent roof, which sagged, and I have had to reinforce with box section cross members. Definitely investigate what your shed will be built of before putting the money down. I wouldn't have one of the plastic ones, they're still a bit flimsy (I have an 8 x 6 one of those too, for the garden stuff).

Thanks all. Definitely don't want to be building one myself. Not got the time nor inclination to start with that.

Have had a look on ebay and found some decent looking sheds at not-too-expensive cost, from companies around, and have also found a few more local as well to visit next weekend.

Not wanting to store masses of stuff in there; few tins of paint, some bike tools and parts, a couple of deck-chairs, BBQ and a bicycle perhaps.

Will check some out this weekend to get a feel for the size once inside and see Thumbs Up

I'd see them on ebay actually. Would be an extra £64 for delivery as I'm in Hertfordshire. They're just not that 'pretty' enough for the wife Laughing

We have 2 local garden centre shed stores to visit on the weekend, for around £800 delivered and erected (ooh matron), that look up to the wife's standard Laughing

Try searching for 'garden summer house' rather than shed if you're looking for something 'pretty'..

or something like https://www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co.uk/log-cabins/billyoh-dorset-log-cabin/20545

If you are in Herts then have a look at Martins Sheds. Family run business that can do you a bespoke build for a good price. I've had a few bits made by them over the years.

Thanks for all your replies and responses to this. Apologies for lack of communication, so here are a shedload (har-har) of photos of current progress.

My father in law and brother in law (both builders) decided to take it upon themselves to build us our hybrid summer house / shed project. Here's how it went.

Managed to get the week of glorious hot weather too which was nice, plus I've helped here and there (bank holiday I was full on with them - otherwise they've been doing it whilst I've been at work).

Neighbours have been fine whit it! One was a little concerned about height of it but was appeased when I said it was to be a flat roof - and she also wondered about the sides being plain wood - I told her dark felt would be used. So all OK there.

First I removed the old shitty shed.

https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y41/doovydoo/A5CBDB94-1A46-429A-8FA9-E9CBA253A6E1_zpsofhisqeh.jpg

Off in the car to the dump (two visits needed, thank god for roofracks)

Then the guys came over and installed us a base. It is secured in place on concrete blocks cemented in place. Elevated too, as our plan later is to get decking in the garden back up to the shed itself. Made from american plywood, apparently.

https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y41/doovydoo/DCF153CC-5679-4EE8-B0D8-F16F557C4C1D_zpsvokpiwmh.jpg

Then the sides went up. They've put felt over both sides and back panels for waterproofing.

I know, right Very Happy

You should have seen the size of the chicken coop they built for my sister in law last month Laughing

It is massively over-engineered for a shed, but it will be damn waterproof and spacious.

Good job Thumbs Up but I think I would have had smaller windows and double doors, particularly building from scratch.
That door looks pretty narrow, 2 foot 3 if my eye is in. Good work none the less. Thumbs Up

Laughing Cool shed.

One question, is there a pitch to the roof? Or is it totally flat? If flat, is there gutter all the way round?
