Hello all!

I passed my full test back in February and I am getting my first bike in January (trust me, it's been utter agony waiting this long!). Really excited to get out and about and will most likely be taking the advanced riders course and hopefully be attending some local meetups and ride alongs Very Happy

Anyway, just wanted to say hi!

Go on then don't leave me half finished, what's the bike and why the wait. Saucy details without the climax, poor show, refund due.

Interesting choice - as in, increasingly unusual. Have you test ridden one? Compared it against the 600/650F or other less revvy machines?

I've looked at the ER6N (passed my test on it) and test ridden the RR. My early riding days will be pretty lonely as I don't personally know many bikers but that should be sorted pretty quick lol.

I do really like the riding position of the RR (majorly comfortable) and it looks gorgeous. I did look at the KTM RC390 too but not had chance to try it out. The RR is a firm favourite but I've yet to try other bikes to see whether I can be swayed on that Smile

Fair dos, the hearts wants what it wants. It's being discontinued this year, but there should be a few kicking around. Just chisel every penny, because once you're into that sort of money and bike, it really does beg the question of why not go 750 / litre instead.

I agree from a cost perspective, but I'm not exactly playing it safe with the decision of a RR, let alone a litre variant lol.

Would like an rr myself. Had a 650F brand new, then my madness made me buy a R6, R1 and a VFR 1200f.

Sold the 650f because she was rusting up after a few months, not good, cheap shite made in Thailand.

imo R6 is a wee beasty the rest are boring in comparison....go for the RR tiz a nice bike. Would have one myself but lost so much cash on the other bikes I can't afford one.

Only bike sitting outside now is the R6, love her even though she keeps trying to kill me. R1 is parked up in the garage and sold the VFR 1200F because she refused to be smooth under 80 mph.

I tested the R6 and the GSX-R 600. I found the R6 much more like hard work to ride in comparison to the Suzuki, which just did everything fuss free,

I stand by my GSX-R even more since I've gotten use to throwing it around. I would more than likely have gotten used to the R6 too and be happy with it too, but now I'm used to this bike, I fear I wouldn't enjoy the R6 if I got one tomorrow.

A pal of mine got rid of his K5 for an R6, last week and still hates it. He thinks a steering damper will cure a lot if it though. I think on reflection of my test ride, that a steering damper would have made the whole experience a better one. Especially when the front end becomes light under hard acceleration. The GSX-R, has never given me that feeling and it's one I wasn't fond of on the test of the R6. I also felt the R6 was a bit twitchy when changing direction at speed and that you felt closer to being low/high sided than the GSX-R, which at the same speeds in the same bends urges you to go faster. The R6 could almost certainly go round them faster, but it didn't encourage me like the GSX-R does.
Track times suggest the R6 is a more than competent beast at taking corners, so I know I was to blame there. I just know that as a freshmen, I'd be able to track the GSX-R faster sooner. But I am aware that once I was advanced, I'd be faster on the R6.

So, I'm not beating down on the R6, It's just it seemed to be less for the road than the track, but I imagine you could sort that out with some aftermarket tweaks. It certainly, for me at least is a better looking bike (I was looking at 2000-2003 models).

So, my reason for posting was to ask, why not a GSX-R?
Purely in the context that you said you would like an RR. Which to me is not as good as either the R6 or the GSX-R.

I've looked at so many different bikes, from the SV, Hornet and Bandit level, right up to the R6, GSX-R and Daytona 675.

If I'm honest, I don't spend half as much time looking at other bikes as I do with the RR. As rightly pointed out, I'm not going to be pushing the bike and so my factors are mostly heart-driven. Looking at a 2005 ideally, but I am aware of the improvements on the 2008> models. I'll live outside with a decent 17-19mm chain, waterproof cover and possible SmartWater coverage. I don't live in a high risk area and I'm setting up an IP Camera to watch over the drive way, to be on the safe side.

My budget is £2-3k and insurance for me, fully comp, is £700ish. Not the best, and this is why I'm a little hesitant. A FZ6 is £406 if I declare its on the driveway and £206 if I lie and say its in a garage...

If I was to be sensible (and its likely I'll go this way), I'd end up with a nice Yamaha (or Yamasaki as I read on another thread... lol!) FZ6, which will be considered by others to be a more 'sensible' riding position and a bit easier on the old wallet considering I also am running a car.

I found the RR very comfortable and that's the bike I really want. It's just a case of head over heart decisions. I'd be pushing it (in my current financial position) with the RR, but its a little more manageable with something cheaper.

Ah, right, for some reason I'd got the idea that you were thinking of buying new.

Get a private sale 2005 RR and you're unlikely to lose much money on it even if you decide to change it soonish.

That insurance though. Pale

For the first six thousand miles or so an old Hornet would probably make more sense tbh. Grand, grand and a half. No paranoia about plastic damage writing it off. Plus more importantly you get a slightly more forgiving introduction to peaky il4 600s that red line at what, 13k? More w/ the rr. There's no shame at all in taking a step or three to get to the 600rr. One thing you might well find with that (kind of) bike is that there's an onus on you to perform - especially when riding with other more experienced riders (who may well be on less powerful bikes). That can be stressful - during in a period of learning when you've already got a shitload to be dealing with.

Conversely there are those who say "YOLO" - so live your dream. There's something to be said for that - but if your dream is to learn to ride fast bikes well there are plenty of very experienced, very quick riders out there who'll tell you there're easier ways to do that than hopping on a 600rr with no prior experience. If by contrast your dream is to just pose in your colourful leathers and repsol livery, that's fine. Just don't be too gutted when old men on v-stroms come by you.

I've looked into the hornets and bandits and, to be honest, I was thinking it would be the more sensible route up the bike I want. Insurance wise, however, the hornet is nearly the same as stating the RR will be garaged (£530)!

I think others have somewhat ruined the image for anyone now wanting a sports bike as an early bike choice lol. I've got a lot of pondering to do before January!

Ridiculous that I get those premiums though with a decade of driving no claims Sad. Or maybe it isn't... I don't know how insurance is made up/worked out lol

I appreciate the advice, it's been great. It's a cost factor and I need to consider which way I go Smile. The biggest part of me wants to be able to show off my RR on January lol Smile

How much riding do you really intend to do in January? A lot (not all) of sportsbikes will stay tucked up nice and cosy in garages until March or April.
