I want to check the accuracy of my speedo to ensure that I'm going as fast as I can and should be, and I think the easiest way to do this will be to use a GPS speedo app on my phone. However, there's obviously the difficulty of looking at it whilst riding and I don't want to end up in a hedge.

So I've got this crazy idea: my phone came with a terrible case (thanks, Samsung) which I have no wish to walk around with, but I'm thinking I could put four holes in it and attach it with cable ties to my handlebars and then put the phone into it. Maybe then put something around the whole thing to stop my phone from bouncing off and hitting me in the plums as soon as I go over a bump.

As a temporary solution, can anyone think of any reason why this is an unutterably shit idea and why I should go and get my bumps felt?

If not, I'll have a go. Pics to follow!

Find one of the road signs that tells you how fast you're going. Wink

I'll be going too fast on my mighty 125 steed for it to register.

Your local community speed watch is another useful tool for calibrating your speedo as they send a letter congratulating you on your achievement. Mr. Green

"Dear Mr Diem,

Please stop riding like an old woman. Your lack of speed and the pathetic attempt you make to lean around corners is making us sick.

Regards,

Your local traffic police team"

I wouldn't trust a jury rig for a top end phone. If it was me it would certainly fall off. Laughing

Even if I mounted my iPhone somewhere you couldn't read it outdoors anyway, so I use a GPS app that logs my trip, and make a mental note of what speed my speedo says at a certain point. I then check it on the log later, so I know that 70 on my YBR's speedo is is 64.47mph on the GPS, and 75 is 68.72 Smile

App du jour is VBox, but you should be able to find something similar for yours.

I was gonna say use the GPS app, start recording, put the phone in your pocket, do 30mph on the clock, stop, check the phone.

Oh, I know you wanted a cheap solution, well this one is completely free of charge and it will answer your question as well. Thumbs Up

In fairness, the phone I used cost about 20 quid (current one is 40).

The velcro probably has less chance of dropping the phone than I do judging from my record....
