About ten years ago I wrote This account of a fire on a bike It prepared me well for The Brighton Speed Trials last weekend.
Last year I had a problem with fuelling and for this season I had fitted two massive SU car floats to my carb that had seemed to work well at Westonzoyland and Ramsgate. I need rollers to start up the Badger and in truth fired up a little early with five or six riders in front of me in the box and a red flag with two riders left caused more delay causing my exhaust to get rather hot, at this stage I noticed a lot of warmth around my right thigh so I reached down to the carb and by hand got hot as it caught fire from a methanol leak, as dope burns with an invisible flame it was not apparent to anyone why I was doing a bit of hand waving and anyway my hand was back under the tank to turn off the RH fuel tap (it caught fire again) and then I used the other hand to turn off the LH tap. Methanol burns clear but fortunately fuel hoses do not and our marshal spotted the yellow flames and fired a foam extinguisher at me. The cause, foaming fuel from vibration and a split float gasket.

incident at about 4.00

Poor bloke was called Amanda but I did rather steal her moment even if she did bog on the line.
