to get my daughter some gear Cool

She turned 5 a few months ago and hounds me to come out on the bike. No uber distance yet, just to school/back and out to a cafe which she is happy with and in her words "only a little bit fast, not fast fast"

Anyone here bought a lid/jacket/gloves for a little person? If so, where from?

Moto x gear would probably be the easiest to get hold of for kids?

Race leathers in Darwen used to sell kids gear, not been in for a while though.

Pretty sure there's a section on SBS as well.

ive called and asked infinity (where ive got both my lids from) to order an XS helmet in so we'll see how that fits tomorrow.

the issue is with gloves... and jackets. nowhere seems to stock them for kids. yes i can order online but its difficult to know if they will fit or not

boots is another matter. I think a decent pair of leather 'over the ankle' boots will do the job..

2nd hand is the way to go right? There must be gear on Ebay that's been worn twice before little Bridget had a growth spurt and Daddy had to throw another £500 away on the next size.

That's how I fitted mine out, although they were a tad older than five.
What bike has the OP got that has foot pegs a five year old can reach?

she fits on the gpz500 Smile Thumbs Up I've put a top box on with a back rest/padded bit to stop her falling off the back. I wont be going faster than 30 for first dozen or so trips to get her used to it. falling off the side is my main worry

both of her feet get on the rear pegs properly(middle of her foot, not tippy toes) and she can stand on the pegs without the seat causing issues. She gets on/off herself without issue too Cool

second hand is a good shout. I'l fork out for a new lid as i know what kids are like. the fuckers are never careful with anything.

You can get a belt you can wear with handles on that might be easier for her to hold on to.

You would also have a feel for how she's holding on rather than trusting her to hold on to the hand holds on the bike.

I doubt she would be secure wrapping her arms round your waist, if her arms are even that long.

Hopefully your seat is grippy, if it's had polish on then you'll need to get the wax off.

At 5, I'd be very wary but it does depend on the kid and it's your call. I'd be keeping it very local, and picking a time with little interaction with other road users. This gives you the best chance of super smooth control that's not going to jolt her around.

Those belts work really well, the ex and I got one for our youngest to use when riding pillion with either of us. She wasn't overly bothered about using it ( from age 7/8) but her older sister, who wasn't so confident insisted on using it.

Top box with padded back looks good but whether you can really trust something that has a 5kg rating... (yes, I know we all stick 50kg in them regularly but it's one thing overloading it with lunch and tools and quite another having one's offspring bouncing against it)

The oldest hasn't been on a bike since I sold mine but the youngest has been knocking around on a scabby 125 for a few years now and has had at least one off...Get them hooked and you'll have a whole new set of worries when they want their own wheels!

Doesn't last long, ha !! It will soon become, "can you go over the speed bumps quicker !" My daughter has been coming on the back of the bike since she was 2, firstart starting off with a belt designed for taking kids on the back of snowmobiles from canada, to the 'love handles', which to be fair, she didn't really use them much at all.

She's now nearly 14, and I'm giving her lessons on a 50cc scooter, so, she'll be more prepared for her cbt in a couple of years time. THe scooter was initially bought for the missus, but it's too good an opportunity to miss for my daughter, oh, yeah, and 15 year old nephew Smile

As to clothing, I'm afraid, it was online for me as well, she's now big enough to get gear from 'normal' shops now.

cheers guys,

the seat isn't slippery as such but i've got a load of anti slip mat left over from when i did the tool boxes (thanks delboys garage for that idea). Stapled in properly that should see her sitting in the same place

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Large-Roll-Anti-Slip-Matting/dp/B00ILT8NWE
This stuff ^^

Agreed on the top box load rating but she isnt leaning against it, its simply there as a precaution. As said, its going to be local trips with at least a dozen just going around the block with her getting used to going round corners and teaching her what not to do.
She can grip around my waist but im not getting any thinner Laughing Laughing plus being only 5, when she does grip round the waist her head(and helmet) is against my back which isnt comfortable for either of us.

I have a "belt" type thing on my jacket but its not got handles. that's a really good idea Thumbs Up il have a browse for one

wow. 2yo is very young Cool i'd never get it past Mrs Sharpe2002 at that age.

Online seems to be the way to go. I'm not complaining though as its cheaper Laughing So far i've ordered a jacket with should/elbow/back armour and some cheap gloves.

The one I got from Canada, was similar, however, it was lower down, had neck support for the kid, and a pad between us with small handlebars on, the pad was attached to a belt that went round me, and another belt that went around her, plus the neck support.

Here's a pic, with it loosely fitted, it worked extremely well

how old was your kid in that picture?

I was considering getting a cheap cruiser specifically for rides out but what concerned me was whether my daughter would be able to reach the foot pegs..

it also doubles up as a project Shhh! Whistle

Hi

She was about 3, maybe 4? She got the bug early, and it's never gone away Smile

Cheers

Jacket and trousers, gloves and an hjc lid has been purchased. The local infinity was fairly helpful even if they couldn't get the small in stock in time.

Boots tomorrow after my pockets have been emptied and the couch turned over for pennies. Total so far is just over £200

Just temember that in the UK the only restriction on children riding pillion is that their feet must be able to reach the foot pegs, yours looks like it was about 4 inches too short of that stupulation when that pic was taken!

Hi

Did wonder about that, but, the police saw that setup on numerous occasions, never once questioned it.

I was waved at furiously by a copper in his squad car on the M5, when I didn't see him, until far too late, tucked in between several artics. I reasoned that it was probably because I passed him doing an indicated 120!!! My exit was just ahead and, bloody typical, had to stop for a red light. Mr Plod pulled up alongside me, looked over and shook his head, the lights went green and we parted company.
Just because he didn't do me didn't mean that it was legal and there's nothing to say that he didn't then go and pull a biker for passing him at 90. I take the view that it is far more preferable to break the law knowingly, having consciously taken the decision to do so, than get pulled and wonder what you've done to warrant it. Laughing

When my sister and I first started going pillion, we wore Dr Martens as boots.

Proper boots are easy to find in small sizes and I suspect the weight of bike boots on a kids legs wouldn't be particularly pleasant in an off?

i looked at DMs but couldnt find them in her size, they're also a bit bottom heavy. I wear DMs or some RST brown leather boots which have proven themselves

i ended up getting some decent quality (over the ankle) walking boots. They're light enough for them not to bother her when walking/climbing and have decent grip and padding around the ankle bones which is what i was concerned about and they feel sturdy.
