Saw a zillion bikes today in the Eifel but one caught my eye for some reason - a red new SV650. Looked quite flash, sounded good too. I was walking to the pub when it passed and suddenly made me want one. Somehow just looked like the perfect bike for a Sunday blat. Definitely a decent machine.

This happens to me quite often, and I get obsessed with the bike for a while, then I forget about it. I think that's normal Thinking

Obsession for me includes lots of research.

Take the Norton Commando for example. It's been on my obsession list for years but until they make more reliable ones, and a little bit cheaper it won't get bought.

I was like this first time I saw an SV650 (curvy model), and then when I saw the thou in that coppery colour. All totally meh to me now. Once you've ridden the 650 for a while, it just loses that appeal unfortunately.

Weird bikes really. Essentially pretty good, but quickly become boring.

I like the ladies' one - teh gladioli. You can pick up a minter for thruppence ha'penny. Because let's face it, no right-thinking male-blooded blerk (tr - proper northern bloke) with actual live wriggling spunk in their nads would be caught dead on one. Enter me. No not like that - cheeky!! Comfier than the mt07, and (currently at least) loads cheaper used, with apparently slightly more able suspension. I do prefer the round light on the sv though - I'm glad suzuki kept that. Quite a rarity on new bikes now. Dates it to the early '90s but christ, even that's better than what teh Japonesers are doing with front lights and instrument clusters these days. Brrr. Nasty.

The new "SV"650 is a Gladys, with some minor tweaks. Round light, pointy-SV rear footpeg hangars, seat and tank are resculpted, but it's primarily a marketing exercise to put the name everyone wants on the bike nobody[*] bought.

They've even retained that joke truncated front mud-non-guard, but dealt with it by (finally) placing a shield over the front plug. No pink ones this time though, but sadly no contrasting frame colours either, presumably to further distinguish it from the red-frame SFV650.

The Gladys was supposed to replace the SV years ago, got great reviews when it came out (both as the Gladys and the SFV650), but never sold in anything like the numbers that the SV did. Looks to be the same with the 2016 "SV" - it didn't help Suzuki's August sales figures.

[*] For dramatic internets purposes, there are about 2000 of them on the road.

The Gladius' downfall was the name, it just sounds like Russell Crowe's gay brother. They should've called it something more manly.

I haven't ridden the new SV, I'm sure it rides and handles nicely, but the front light is so out of place. It doesn't match the rest of the bike, the body is modern but the light is traditional/retro.

I know it probably doesn't - but if it did that would be rather apt if I owned one, as I've yet to experience coitus.

A notable rumour around here at one point was that it actually stood for "slimy vulva"!

They might have been able to laugh off the Gladys/Gladioli witticisms if they hadn't also released a pink ("red") one. I think that cemented its reputation as a girls' bike.

Yup. That light with a flat backside and they could have marketed it a a retro flat-bob-tracker, such hipster. But they actually kicked up the rear and made it spikier. It's like it was designed by two teams who weren't allowed to see each other's end of the bike.

All that said, when they crack and start offering it at 0% for under £5K with some accessories... never say never.

A gladius is a sword. I don't think you can get more manly... in theory.

If you ride an SV I can guarantee you'll be quite safe from getting little Trevor wet a while longer.

Maximus Cockus could describe both of the above

I bought an Italian 2 stroke on a whim recently, it was great - unless you're buying brand new you rarely have much to lose if you shop smart. If you fancy an SV, buy an SV, when it disappoints sell it on for pretty much what you bought it for.

If you get lucky you'll turn a profit. If you get unlucky it'll burst into flames on the M4 and a crazy man will join you for a BBQ.

I'm struggling not to buy one of these at the moment when I've spent the last 12 months yearning for a Striple-R.

It just gets me right in the 'want gland'.

Funny how that happens.
