My brother in law is nearly 17 by a few months. He is currently doing a "public services" course that gives him a few A levels when he finishes etc..

He hasn't really got any ambitions of doing x y & z but he has said he wants to drive a tank Rolling Eyes

Anyone here been in the military if so which flavour an how did you find it?

Funnily enough we went to https://www.tankmania.co.uk/ a few months ago

But it was neither mania or tanks. but we did get to drive over some mud in a DAF canvas backed truck, then get covered in diesel fumes from a hagglunds bv206

It's not *that* much fun. I 'raced' around the black forest in one. Remind him that it might involve being shot at, either by the other side or the Americans.

We've currently got fewer tanks than Switzerland. He might as well put "unicorn cavalry" on his application.

I've got a couple of friends who are ex-RTR (although that was some time ago) and a buddy of mine is current serving REME.

He's fully qualified on the Chally2 although as Rogerborg alludes to, we don't have many in service anymore, they've been mostly mothballed.

A mate of mine joined the navy, became an unexploded ordnance diver, left the navy, and now clears minefields all over the world with plastic explosive or a deck mounted .50 cal.

If I had my time again, I'd do that.

Is that like a "dead body undertaker"? Is there a lot of cause for dealing with exploded ordnance? Thinking

I recently found out a bloke I went to school with was in the SBS, did his time an is now earning squillions diving on oilrigs etc.

Shocked

I keep saying about the Navy but his literal response to it is "they are all Gay in the Navy" Rolling Eyes

Ever the pedant.

I highly doubt there is a requirement for dealing with exploded ordnance unless fragments are causing issues with underwater inlets for power stations etc

Unexploded ordnance is the term for munitions which have not exploded although designed to do so. You also have unexploded bombs. Ordnance covers a wide variety of military equipment which includes munitions, missiles, firearms, armored vehicles, self propelled guns.

They do not remove trucks or tanks from the seabed. They destroy mines. Hence they are unexploded ordnance divers. Not ordnance divers. Thumbs Up

oh dear Laughing

I can't really imagine we're gonna be deploying tanks anywhere soon. It's just not what we do anymore as we don't seem to fight anyone with standing armies or columns of armor that would require them. So unless he wants to spend his time charging around Salisbury Plain, tell him to find another trade! Preferably something he can use when he leaves.

Or just let him get on with it! Thumbs Up

I don't know, with the recent rise of the Soviet Union, there was talk of opening some of the closed German bases and dusting a few Challengers off

However, with the talk of the EU army and us pulling out the EU, we may well leave them to it

Never been in the military but I'd still like to drive a tank, think secretly we all do cos its a bloke thing to do.
I'd like to have one and take it to a caravan club site (member here) and set it up with a camouflage awning and crack the barbi up with a bottle of Prosecco and invite the next pitch people round for a drink.

the problem with track layin vehicles is that they are leaky .. of fuel and battery gasses.. and stink of oil & grease .. you can smell them in a location before you see them.. off road .. yeah .. till they throw a track.. freezing in the winter and boilin in the summer..

enjoy

Royal Engineers have an armoured squadron. Titan bridge layers and all that.

Spent most of the time cleaning tools and hours getting the tank tracks back on if they slip off. IMO pretty dusty and dark inside one of them. Fun soon wears out.

Joining the forces can be a very positive thing for a directionless youff.
After leaving college in 1980 I'd decided to join up if I hadn't sorted a job by 1st January, but started a job in mid-November so it didn't happen.

But being a general soldier/sailor/aircraftsman is just doing something for the sake of getting a job. Living in a garrison town I can tell you we've plenty of homeless former soldiers. Guys that didn't learn any trade during their time and can't deal with making their own decisions.

My ex-brother-in-law joined the tanks and fucked his knees up jumping off them but before he left because of that, they did train him as an HGV driver.
Unfortunately it was a job he soon grew to hate but it gave him a living to keep his family.

TL;DR - try to aim him towards learning a trade in the forces, rather than just being a lad.

Used to be Army, armoured infantry (using Warrior IFV).

Would not recommend to anyone but if turned back the clocks would do it all again.

However nobody wants to drive armoured vehicles. A warrior drivers job was proper turbo-shite. Driving till you fall asleep, cooking away next to a massive engine and then farting around doing maintenance when everyone else is wanking/eating/smoking.

I actually had a driver fall asleep driving in Iraq and we ran over a car, the car driver just made it out in time. Fucking hilarious but highlights the shitiness of being a driver.

Send him on one of those days where he can drive an old abbot or a 43skip. He can do the fun bit and leave some other poor sod to replace the tracks.
