Doctor/ nurse folk of BCF lend me your ears...

Every time I do any sort of strenuous exercise i get a bad case of the cramps, normally worst in my hamstring, occasionally in my quad.

My mrs laughs her tits off as my leg locks up an i'm making noises like ive just been bummed by a killer whale

Anyone else get them?

Someone has recommended salt tablets? thought salt was bad?

Too much salt is bad.

Too little salt. Also bad.

Different people need different amounts of salt when they exercise. There is a huge variation.

Are you doing a good warm-up before this strenuous exercise. And a good warm down after?

my last serious bout of t'cramps was on the drive back from walking up Snowdon a few weeks ago.

Then last night after coming back from the gym, sat in mine for about an hour then the tell tale shake of my leg before impending doom of leg spasm, an again this morning sat at my desk

Crying or Very sad

Do you drink plenty? Do you eat a balanced diet? It could be an electrolyte imbalance.

Or teh bad AIDS.

No, it's normal to stretch and warm up before and after strenuous exercise. You wont see any professional athelete who doesn't.

They do it for a reason. That being it helps stop your muscles being damaged. It also helps prevent cramp.

I wasn't a fan of any of their albums, but I've recently re-started listening to Kid Congo again (who was with The Cramps... but not sure how long for). Cool

IMO this /\ /\,
If stretching and a bit of salt doesn't sort it then try bananas etc.

So it happened well after the exercise? Definitely do lots of warm-down stretches. Ask the gym instructors - they'll show you what stretches to do to hit the areas cramping up.

Anti-cramp tablets or salt in your juice to drink when exercising, and make sure you drink all of your juice (or water if you can drink salty water).

Helped me Thumbs Up

Water!
Cramping is to do with your muscles dehydrating. Salt plays a big part in this, as does water. Keep well hydrated and you should find that your cramps are happening less.

I always get cramp if I've not drunk much before exercise so good call Thumbs Up If I've had a busy day at the office and drunk a load of tea I'm especially susceptible to cramps as I've pissed a load of fluids out during the day.

Electrolyte drinks are supposed to help too but I've never personally tried. Dioralyte is pretty good apparently.

Another vote for water, my first thought was dehydration. Your body shows you how dehydrated you are by the colour of your pee. lighter the better.

Everyone always defaults to the diet approach, but in a lot of cases cramp is quite often caused by lack of fitness and/or fatigue.

I agree with potential 'lack of fitness'. It might even just be lack of use of specific muscle groups.

I'm neither especially fit not unfit, but whenever I try a different activity I end up as Granddad Derivative the next day, stiff arms, legs, ankles, whatever. It subsides over a week or so as I get used to it.

If I go cycling and then go for a run, the different muscles used are all like "WTF bro".

I'm currently nursing a fucked ankle from skateboarding. I'm probably going to go out this evening anyway and make a twat of myself because it's like well fun innit.

If it's proper cramp, then XEndurance tablets work very well for me.

Of course the real solution is to get fitter IME. The XEndurance tablets just allow me to push harder before I cramp up.

It's salt / lack of electrolytes, try a bag of ready salted crisps and/or sports drink.

Drinking more water will make it worse, you lose salt through sweat and through pissing (which you do a lot).

I got my first ever bad cramp in my leg last night, leg still hurts a little now.

A few years back I had a problem with cramping of my left arm every time I went past my aerobic threshold for than 10 seconds or so when cycling (WTF?!). Turns out I’d managed to get pocket of lactic acid/toxins trapped in my arm. A deep muscle massage of the left arm cured the problem (& made me throw up about 15 min after the massage was over).
