Looking to get myself a new jacket and tried on the Alpinestars Andes jacket yesterday, I was impressed by the fit and the quality and the price seems reasonable too.

What's the general consensus on Alpinestars? Been looking at the Dainese stuff too.

Alpinestar gear I have has all been good quality. If it fits, feels good and is the right price get it.

Both of my sets of leathers are Alpinestars, apart from a few loose threads they have done well. A small slide down the road left a few scuffs up the arm but they aren't noticeable.

I rate it Thumbs Up

What's the water proofing like on it?

I commute over an hour each way to work a day and in the winter time spending most of that time in the rain isn't uncommon.

I struggle to find stuff to fit as I have a large chest and shoulders and a small waist so I'm usually XL or XXL, most manufacturers assume that you'd be 6ft with a massive gut though so cut accordingly.

Being 5ft 9 makes it a struggle.

First world problems. Sad

I'd probably wear A-star stuff if it didn't have a massive logo on it telling the world it's A-star stuff.

Meh. My Ixon gear is worse in that regard. The A* logo is inoffensive enough.

I am pretty happy with my Andes jacket. It's comfy and fits me reasonably well whilst the venting is good for summer and the waterproof membrane hasn't let me down yet. The thermal quilt lining thing is too hot for probably 10 months of the year, but is great when it gets really cold. My only complaint would be that the arms are just a touch too long which means the elbow protectors lie a bit low and that it is fairly heavy for lugging around the shops

I want to try some jackets yesterday. They re all for fatties Sad None of the leathers are fully leather, lots of stretch panels that wont be waterproof Sad
New a* ones look shit, and not a good fit for me.

Dianese zips are rubbish, wear out far too quick.

The stretch panels are great for airflow though, who buys leathers to be dry?

I've always rated Alpine stars gear as decent enough quality and are often very stylish too.

15years ago I bought Dainese everything except boots, and I liked it, was fairly impressed with the quality and finish too. None of the poncy European bright leather jackets have or ever will be up to Crowtree standards or similar though!

Now I'm not such an Italian brand whore and I've added Triumph, Richa, and Furygan gear to my wardrobe.

I'd buy something that fits well now, and is in the colours I want and maybe matches by bikes too. Looks and availability I rate far higher than brand image, quality and price nowadays.

I have an A* leather jacket, touring boots, short boots, summer leather gloves and summer Goretex gloves. All good kit and no gripes thus far. Not tried any of their textile gear yet, but would definitely consider it - didn't get too many faulty returns when I worked with their kit. The only thing I definitely wouldn't buy are the SMX6 boots, as the screws come out of the heel plates and are nigh on impossible to refit*. Maybe A*have rectified this by now, but didn't look like they were going to do anything when I last did that job back in 2014. But I'm not a sports boot fan anyway.

*I think I'm right about which boot and which screws on that boot it was Thinking

The Andes is a great jacket. Fairly high collar to keep the weather out, and plenty of pockets for stashing stuff. Added back and chest armour to mine

One thing I liked about the collar is that it can be clipped back and press studded down for the summer months too.

Think I'm gonna bite the bullet and buy it. Smile

I've got Andes Drystar Jacket too, it's great. It really is waterproof, rode in some crazy rain. As people have already said, nice and comfy, plenty of pockets. I was looking at cheaper jackets as well but they were way too uncomfortable, glad I got this jacket.

I still need to get pants to fit.

It's why I never trust a cow. I mean, I don't know how they've done it, but they've managed to somehow get to Australia, slaughter a few kangaroos, steal their skin to make waterproof coasts for themselves. B***ards.

The only justice is that I've managed to kill the cow and steal their stolen coat back to makes my gloves.

I've been wearing a lot of Alpinestars gear over the last few years. Mainly because it decent enough quality, that when I buy it second hand cheap, I know it'll last a few more years yet.

Leather Bat pants, very good basic tight fit trousers. On my second pair now. Generally comfy, but can get a spot crunched up behind knee after a few hours riding.

Had SMX4, SMX5 and SMX Plus boots. The 4's and 5's were the waterproof versions, both brilliant boots, dry & warm year round, even buying second had fro £50-60, I still got about 1.5 years / 10-12K out of them before the soles wore flat or right through and started leaking. The SMX Plus boots, I only recently got, more race style, very chunky and squeaky. Seem good, but plastic side sometimes catches guard beside pegs. Nicely vented to keep feet cool in summer though.

Got an old Alpinestars leather jacket, bit basic though, with no liner of back armour. Held up fine, even through an off, just got a small hole by pocket where I had my house keys! One of these days I'll replace this with a better Alpinestars jacket, as this one doesn't zip to my bat pants for some reason.

Did have some DryStars textile trousers, these were less good. Kept falling down unless I had braces on (were their smallest size!). And the arse would still get damp during a storm, even after washing them with Nikwax textile waterproofing stuff.

Also got some Jet Road Gore-tex gloves of theirs. Again, do exactly as their supposed to, always hold up well against wet.

Overall, it's quality stuff, and has protected me well in a number of minor offs and still been good to wear again. The Jet Road gloves now have bashed in knuckle protectors and the outside layer is shredded in places, but they still hold up fine against the wet! One word of warning though, if you do buy Astars gear off ebay, do watch out for fake copies, as there is quite a bit about.
