Hello all,

I posted a little while ago about what type of first bike I should get, I flirted with a Chinese model but after your advice I decided to go for a Honda PCX 125. My budget has increased from what I though it was going to be so I have around £2.5k maximum for a new bike (gear/insurance ect outside that amount).

The RRP of a new PCX is £2,699. This will be my first time ever going into a dealership, so does anyone have any advice of how or even if I could negotiate the price down on a new bike, is it even possible? (The dealership is an actual Honda dealer in the north east)

There is a dealership approx. 90 miles away that have the bike for £2,399 plus otr charges, would a local dealer match that? Or do they not do deals on new bikes?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

When I was after my busa, I found one cheaper than my local Suzuki dealers about 50 miles away.

I went back the the local shop and said if they matched it they would have a sale. They basically laughed in my face and said they wouldn't make any money at that price.

Just saying don't be surprised if they aren't very polite when you ask. Laughing

Well, you know how much you can get one for. Add bus fare and fuel back, and that's the maximum you should be willing to pay to your local dealer, although you should just ask them to match or beat the £2400.

It's really that simple. They should be persuading you to buy from them, not the other way around. If they're not willing to, thank them for their time and go elsewhere. No drama, you can do it with a smile.

Depends what the OTR costs are, Honda list the £2699 as the OTR price so might not be much in it at all.

Do you really need it to be brand new?
You could have a look at low mileage PCXs.
You may find a bargain.

Dunno if this would be of any help. I came across it whilst browsing myself:

https://www.wheelsmotorcycles.co.uk/pages/used/used-bikes/2016-16-HONDA-WW%20125%20EX2-F-125cc/14482.htm

Wheels definitely have vans. Dunno if they'd deliver that far, but might be worth checking out to see if it'll come in cheaper than buying new.

Haggling is a weird one these days. Cash doesn't seem to interest salesmen these days. When I bought the triumph (granted it was a sold as seen "non-runner" the dealer took in part ex) I knew they wanted it out of there without doing any work to it, so I offered them 700quid and waved the notes under his nose (it was up at 950). Told them I didn't have a penny more and I'd be back same day with a van to take it away, which worked.

However, buying more expensive/new stuff, cash doesn't have the same draw any more. I did once haggle a 15% discount in an electrical store by suggesting I'd be taking it on long term finance (not the interest free stuff). Given the 24.9% interest on the standard finance, I'm guessing they get a sweet bonus on top of the sale and even if they're not on commission, it'll be a part of their performance targets. They guy started getting visibly excited by the sale, offering me this and that thrown in. His face when he rang the total up on the till and said "right, we need some details for the finance" and I said "You know what, I can afford that on my debit card, here'ya go". He got a little bit frosty with me at that point.

The other one I've found that works is to sound really gullible and interested when they start on the extended warranty stuff. A few times when they've talked about warranties, I've made the ooh and ahh noises and sounded interested, but explained that I couldn't really afford that on top. They pretty much always drop the price of the product to seal the deal. I then cancel the policy within the 60day cool off period and get the money for the warranty back.

Yup, that. Consider "taking" any proffered gap insurance as well in return for a lower price, then cancelling that. Of course, it does mean spending longer talking to salesmen. Sick

"I need the monthly payments to be as low as possible"

This means a longer finance deal and higher overall cost so if they knock a token amount off the price in exchange for the longer contract.
Best research who they use for finance though so you can pay off straight away without mahoosive costs. I paid off my ER6 early which was with Blackhorse and I don't think there were any repayment charges.

It's normally about 75 quid registration fee

100 quid for te pdi as two hours labour charges

17quid for first years road fund

So nearly 200 quid which is the price of the first nearest one

Buying a brand new bike cash expect to pay the full price

I have tried every time but never had a decent deal for cash

When I bought my Honda CBR650F I basically emailed a load of Honda dealerships all over the country (except my nearest one) and told them I will be buying a brand new cbr650f in the next week or so and for them to give me their best price.

I received various offers back...I took the lowest one and walked in to my local honda and said if they can beat that I will sign for one there and then.

Within 5 minutes the dealer matched the cheapest quote and as a sweetener agreed to include the first 3 services free if I signed up there and then.

So I did..they got the sale and I got the bike for the cheapest price you could get it for in the UK.

If the dealer had not agreed to match it I'd have simply ordered it online with the cheapest company and got it delivered, but I wanted to support my local Honda and it was also convenient.

Worth doing the same and you may just find one dealer who really wants that 1 more sale and will take it to rock bottom price if they know you're serious.

I paid for a new Honda with cash and they took almost a grand off the list price. It all depends how eager the salesman is for the sale.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the responses. I'm calling into the dealer one day next week so will let you all know the out come. I called the dealer who has the bike for £2,399 and the total otr charges are £72, so the total cost the bike from them is £2,471, only down side is the delivery would be £125 which they said they can't reduce as they use an outside company for that.

But I'm going to take the email where they stated £2,471 and see if my local dealer will match it, if not I'll simply order online and may even just get a train down and pick the Nike up myself.

Thanks again everyone. I've never haggled or tried to reduce the price of anything so I certainly feel more confidant now.

Cheers

£55 first registration fee + £17 VED = exactly right. They're not even stitching you up with any PDI shenanigans.

Go in smiling and with a "let's make this work" attitude and you should be golden.

I have a PCX and bought it new on 1st March on a 16 plate.

Belle Vue Honda in Southend were selling PCXs for £2450 OTR so I just asked my local Honda dealership to match it. They did. Tried to mug me on servicing though so its never been back which is a shame because I had a great experience buying from them.

There is a guy selling PCXs out the back of a shipping container on eBay for £2200. Honda told me they knew of thia seller and as they are grey imports wouldnt honor a warranty.

My bike has had 2 warranty jobs done in 5000 miles.

Say 'Alternatively, I've seen this nice Yamaha...' Sometimes you have to walk out and play the waiting game. I
just bought a car from a main dealer, wanted to do a deal. They played the old 'it's already just been discounted' line so
we said thanks for the test ride and see you later. They called me a few days later and asked me if I'd sold our part ex
privately to make up the difference. I said no as we've seen another one elsewhere and emailed a link to the car
I hadn't even enquired about yet and that swung it in the end. They called me and happily accepted my original offer.
It just took a few days, never appear desperate to buy, they can smell it on you.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the replies, they've been very helpful.

I am now the proud owner of a new Honda PCX!

I called into the dealership, and was straight up with them, told them I was interested in the PCX, but not at there £2,699rrp price. I had been given two quotes from dealers around 100 miles away, one at £2,450 otr and the other at £2,400 otr. Only thing is they were both charging around £125 for delivery. I shown the dealer those quotes (minus the delivery info as they were in separate emails) and told him those prices included free delivery as he said with delivery it would work out around the same. I felt a little bad but whatever.

After about a 20 minute conversation where he went and spoke to someone else several times we agreed a price. £2,430, but I made sure to get something else thrown in as well. I told them I would make it £2,500 if they supplied and fitted a top box for me (which I was planning on buying anyway and cost over £100 just for the box not included fitting)

I'm not sure if I just caught them on a day they had to make sales or if this is possible most of time, but I saved a couple hundred quid on the bike plus saved a bunch on the top box and fitting aswel. All in all A great deal I think.

Thanks again everyone for the responses, they really did help.

Cheers
Mark

topbox wont cost them much anyway so youve probably paid full price for it all anyway.
