Anecdote time.
My mates dad had a rather lovely fox-eye Fireblade, one day he did part company with this lovely specimen at somewhere around the 30mph mark (his guesstimate). He was wearing a t-shirt and jeans (my hero) and landed mostly on his arse/thigh. This fella had/has a few bob so they weren't cheap jeans, but they were just jeans. Tarmac chewed through the denim over his arse cheek, and chewed a fair way through his arse also. He couldn't sit straight for ages, and looked like he'd been bummed by an elephant (Rogerborg's fears are justified, the rapephants are out there...).
I crashed a scootay when I were a scamp at somewhere around the 40mph mark. I was wearing proper bike gear, despite the constant guffawing from my pedboi mates. I got straight back up and the leather jacket I was wearing, although scuffed up, survived right up until the other day when it was cut up for 'sewing projects'. I had no flesh injuries, although my pride got a kicking as it was a failed mega-wheelie attempt... The guffaws did continue...

Go out in your "jeans and jacket", sprint along the road as fast as you can, then throw yourself head first onto the tarmac.
Get back to us when you've actually done that, and we can have a sensible discussion about whether it's worthwhile wearing armoured gear. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
