I guess people aren't bothering to give them proper passwords.

How many people who buy IoT devices are actually security conscious or even know what the fuck they're doing?

Imagine how many computer illiterate people buy internet connected CCTV systems, fridges, thermostats, etc etc?

It's got nothing to do with the people purchasing them and everything to do with the companies that make them not understanding security.

There are still 1000's of heatmeiser thermostats online that have a retarded flaw in them meaning that anyone with even the tiniest bit of intelligence can exploit. The security on them is just in no way secure.

There's a lot of stuff that's rushed to market without proper testing. That's where the problem is. Barry shouldn't need to know anything about butting his temperature monitor on the net to do it securely and safely.

'Internet' of Things is basically a fail from the get go.

Most of this stuff would be far better either on a local network or running on a home server.

Instead we have 'everything must be centralised' because it's more profitable until the server gets hacked and suddenly 50,000 homes turn into freezers.

Do you have a mobile phone?
I'm going to guess that you do.
Back in the day before digital mobile phones were introduced, analogue mobile phones were getting hacked/cloned by people sat on bridges over motorways.
They would scan and pick up the serial codes being used, apply them to a blank phone and sell the phone to someone who wanted free mobile phone calls.
The original owner would be billed a fucking fortune.
But look at us now.
We all have mobile phones within reach, they are much more secure than the old tech.

We are seeing a similar pattern with IoT.

IoT is pretty cool, and we have to go through this shitty phase before we get to the cool LCARS and voice control stuff.

Anything online can, and will be hacked eventually.
Centralised stuff is a good idea, assuming it is as secure as possible at the time.
Unfortunately, the majority of manufacturers don't bother releasing timely software updates to ensure the consumer product and back-end system remain secure.
