Been done before !
Dave Taylor back in the seventies and I seen the bike in Jurby Junk shop that he done it on although I`m not sure if he did it continuous?
Quick search suggests there was motor on front wheel to keep it spinning for gyroscopic effect although I`m not sure what difference that would make.
My money is on a fail for Dougie but best of luck to him.

Expected wind conditions of 60mph gusts mean that unfortunately Dougie Lampkin will not be able to attempt his 37.7 mile wheelie of the Isle of Man TT course scheduled for 24th Sep. It will be postponed until Sunday 25th September.

As much as trials bikes are cool, I think it's a tall order to get one round the TT course non stop, let alone on one wheel.

How much extra fuel would you have to try and carry? Also its a bloody uncomfortable bike to ride 37mile on, and that's even standing up!

I'd expect his speed to be limited to 30-40mph tops too, as you wouldn't want to ride round the course any quicker with tiny brakes and less than great for the road trials tyres?

A supermoto or naked Street bike sounds like the ideal kind of bike for the attempt. Maybe an MT07 or F800R?
As long as it's something that is happy on.one wheel for long periods and by that I mean in terms of lubrication of the engine and being able to fuel ok at any angle (EFI an advantage).

The starboys used to knacker fireblade engines with 6mile wheelies when they stopped getting oil where it needs to go. And a Ducati 916 for example would have filled the airbox with oil long before then and be in the back of the van.

It needs a decent day on the island and a careful choice of bike, that's well prepared and set up for this to be a successful attempt IMO.

Just caught the arsend of something on Redbullshit TV.

Looks like he completed the course on one wheel. (And he had a motor to spin the front too.

Yep, he did it.
Dave Taylor didn't manage it without putting the wheel down three times.

How did he do 37 miles on one tank? I thought those trail bikes held 3 litres max?

That's still over half a gallon, and he only had to go just shy of 40miles, at barely moped-speeds... And you are only looking at a bike with about 25bhp.

Bike does seem to have been loaded up with some sort of tail-pack; how much of that is extra fuel, I don't know; I doubt he'd need much; more important would be keeping it flowing!

Trials bikes usually have some sort of 'sump' around the fuel tap, so that there's a tea-cup full around the take off all the while, when you are on steep inclines or descents; but with the bike at that attitude for that length of time, I'd have been pondering the gravity feed to the carb and the float level IN the carb more urgently.

He used an electric motor to keep the front wheel spinning for the duration; and I suspect that the tail pack on the bike, is probably more stuffed with batteries for that and the Red-Bull camera and telemetry than much extra fuel.

He had an easier time making that front wheel 'gyro' with an off-the shelf e-bike hub-motor, though, where I recall from Dave Taylors attempt in the '80's he was using 'toy' motors from radio controlled cars or the like and tried various ways of driving the wheel with push-bike chains or washing machine belts, and I have the inkling he ended up using a friction drive adapted from a push-bike dynamo!!

I'd be interested to see what they did around the main-jet to compensate for the tilt; towards the end, it definitely sounded like the motor was 'surging & starving' a bit.

BUT... I don't really care HOW he did it... Just that HE has.

And that he might get some public recognition for the exploit.

I've followed his career pretty much from the start; he started in school-boy about the time I did, and while I was pissing about in the clubbies, he was taking world title... after world title.. after world title!!!!!

His is probably Britain's MOST successful professional competition rider, pretty much EVER. He holds twelve world trials championships; seven out-door, and five indoor; and the outdoor are consecutive, SEVEN back to back world titles, in one class. Where few have ever had a hatrick, he'd done the double and added one for good measure!!!! Other accolades are extensive, chap has nine, four of them back-to-back, wins in the Scottish Six-Day (a non championship 'classic' a bit like the IoMTT for trials), as well as both UK and Spanish 'National' domestic championships, from when Montesa HRC required he compete both those in addition to the world rounds in the same seasons..... He is still ranked Number 2 for the most world Trials Championship 'event' wins (as well as championships themselves); and on bag, over all events in all championships, he outstripped even indomitable Sammy Millers tally a long long time ago, and indisputably is Britain's most successful trials rider, ever.

Mike Hailwood, never scored as many world championship titles as Lampkin; Barry Sheene half even that number; Carl Foggerty? by comparison is WTF is he? and Guy Martin... nice guy as he may be; How the hell is THIS chap SO overlooked!!!!

About the only good thing the cheshire cats administration did was acknowledge his achievements with an MBE.. absolutely appalling that that grinning idiot got to know his name, when most of the motorcycling world STILL remain ignorant of it!!!

Maybe this will redress matters a little.... though he always seemed some-what camera shy!!

For his next challenge, see how far he can get in Edinburgh before the bike gets nicked out from under him.
