At first I was after an 1190 full on adventure bike but now I'm thinking a 990 SMT would suit me more, considerably cheaper and more hooligan-y. Never really toured before so seems a good place to start and also blast around B roads on. Anyone own/owned one on here?

I have one. I'm about 3 months in and have done more miles on it than in 2 years prior on the triumph.

In short, I love it. It's not without its foibles and issues but it's so much fun it's instantly forgiven.

Amazingly plush suspension - fantastic brakes. Point and squirt wheelie machine. It's not the fastest thing in the world but it's a hooligan at delivering what it does have.

Best decision I ever made. Even if it does eat oil, cost a fortune to service, screams STEAL ME and wants to kill you every ride.

The trait of a fun bike in my book Thumbs Up

I read they do like to burn oil, but how much is yours going through? It's not exactly cheap stuff Shocked

What is the top end like on them? I've heard 130, but I'm not too fussed it's a v-twin after all, all about the torque.

Can't tell you for sure as I've not topped up yet (awaiting oil delivery - 13 quid a litre LOL). But I think it's doing about half litre every 3k or so. I've done 2k and I'm about 40% down from max on sight glass. Not too bad but coming from a bike I never topped up and having such expensive oil, it hurts a touch.

I've not taken mine over about 110 - I'd reckon on 130 ish as hearing quite short. With that said 85/90 in top is comfortable and not full of bad vibes.

I really do rate it. For what is a big bike, it's light and quick to turn, easy to corner and huge fun. I've even got used to the snatchy throttle now and see that as part of the fun.

I've had my eye on these for ages - just waiting for the right combination of bike for sale to coincide with funds available.

I assume you're using the Motorex oil? Have you looked elsewhere? I found an alternative, well-known synthetic 10W-50 on Amazon for under £40 (4 litres). Or do KTM (owner)s only take Motorex?

I did have a quick look around and a few have gone away from Putoline Nano with no issue but I'm going to have the next service done by KTM dealer, and that's what they'd put in, so I wanted what I bought to match.

Later in life I'll drop the dealer servicing and go home brew, then it'll get what it gets.

Barter hard on pricing. If you've watched them a while you'll see that whilst they go up for strong money, they stick around a while. Wouldn't be overly scared of miles either, mine is over 30k but really solid.

99 out of 100 would recommend. A* plus plus.

My brother (Gixer69 on BCF) has one and has modified it with all sort of nice bits and pieces and he loves it Thumbs Up

But he had a problem with the standard chain, which snapped and destroyed the clutch slave cylinder. At first he thought it was a DID chain, but on closer inspection found it to be a Regina, which was the same make fitted as OEM to my KTM enduro. This was swapped for a DID before I even rode my KTM,as I have a big distrust of Regina, having heard of many other mishaps to occur to other friends bikes with that make of chain Thumbs Down

Not such a bad thing as the slave's are well known to leak Shocked

Would be after as new and as low miles as I can find really, 2013, under 10,000 miles would be ideal. Shame about them having ABS on the newer ones though.

Probably be easy to disable, for most bikes it's just a fuse.

You can turn the ABS off via the display. Have to do it every time ignition reset but it's easy.

It's actually a really good system. I've had some hard braking moments that I expected it to be triggered on, but it's very unobtrusive.

Yeah that's the one everyone rates Thumbs Up My 690 one doesn't leak either, I think it's just the LC8 where they are crap. Really bugs me that Magura clutches require such painfully expensive oil, the new Brembo ones do not but I've heard shock oil is the same stuff. At least the 690 and 990 use the same Magura set up, and also engine oil I think.

Putoline sell the same product as Motorex for mineral clutch oil

Topped up oil before a little ride today - took 200ml or thereabouts to get back up to near full on sight glass. So it's not doing so bad in terms of usage after all Smile
