I have a Suzuki gn125. It is used for commuting in-town, and struggles to reach 70kph. I usually wear a helmet, but wondering just how "un-safe" it is to ride at that speed with no other riding gear?

If I were to slide in jeans and a jacket at 60kph, how much damage could I really do? Is it recommended to have riding pants and jacket for such low speed?

Try it and find out.

Buy kit accordingly after you've gathered your findings.

You'd probably lose a lot of skin at 60kph... get some kevlar jeans and there are loads of 'casual' looking bike jackets available nowadays if its the look that bothers you.

Have a little look around youtube for low speed bike accidents (Motor bike and pedal cycles).
When you see how quick denim then flesh wears down on the tarmac you'll soon come to the conclusion that wearing at least Kevlar jeans, cheap bike jacket & gloves and some decent boots are a sensible idea.

Gear is better than no gear.

If you don't ride the bike because you can't be arsed to put your trousers on then that is rather sad.

Philosophy.

I've been slacking more and more as of late, and one day, I will have no skin. Not good.

I always wear at least a jacket, gloves, and sturdy boots, simply because I find it more comfortable. It helps that my boots are almost acceptable as formal wear.

Anecdote time.

My mates dad had a rather lovely fox-eye Fireblade, one day he did part company with this lovely specimen at somewhere around the 30mph mark (his guesstimate). He was wearing a t-shirt and jeans (my hero) and landed mostly on his arse/thigh. This fella had/has a few bob so they weren't cheap jeans, but they were just jeans. Tarmac chewed through the denim over his arse cheek, and chewed a fair way through his arse also. He couldn't sit straight for ages, and looked like he'd been bummed by an elephant (Rogerborg's fears are justified, the rapephants are out there...).

I crashed a scootay when I were a scamp at somewhere around the 40mph mark. I was wearing proper bike gear, despite the constant guffawing from my pedboi mates. I got straight back up and the leather jacket I was wearing, although scuffed up, survived right up until the other day when it was cut up for 'sewing projects'. I had no flesh injuries, although my pride got a kicking as it was a failed mega-wheelie attempt... The guffaws did continue...

My old leathers survived 2 good long slides at 50ish with scuffing before they had to be retired.

Work trousers didn't survive a 30mph off on a "it's 2 mins on the bike, will be fine" trip, and I was overjoyed to discover the joys of road/gravel rash. You can't explain just how much that shit hurts to someone, but put it this way - I'd rather snap my femur again.

Put gear on, because it will happen, and you will not like it.

What's that around 37mph, lycra cunts get up after coming off at that speed in nothing more than spray on pants and some polystyrene packaging on their head.

Then again I've gone down at less than that and if I hadn't of had hip armour on I'd have been walking funny for a very long time after 200kg of bike and 100kg of me being slammed into the tarmac.

It's your choice, but I don't go out in anything less than kit with proper armour in all round.

25mph on pedal iron will ddestroy a pear of jeans and give you some choice scars.

A rear-ending from stationary on high grip tarmac is enough to make gloves look tatten enough to be thankful that wasn't your hand you just skinned.

I dropped a GZ (stylised stablemate of GN) at about 25 mph avoiding a smidsy, wore some textile trousers through at the knee, destroyed a boot where my ankle had a meeting with the chain and made a mess of some gloves. I got away with some bruising and and sprained ankle and was riding a month later and walking without pain a month after that. if I hadn't had kit on, I'd have probably had my ankle cut through to the bone, lost a kneecap and ground the flesh of the palm of my right hand.

I was a new rider when I killed that GZ, and I'd just got myself all the bits of kit. Cheap-ish kit mind, a hand me down jacket, £40 ebay trousers, cheapest boots hein gericke had and some gauntlet style gloves that I'd picked up out of the sale bin. It was enough and the difference between life-changing injuries and telling the girlfriend to pick me up a classified ads magazine to read whilst I was waiting for xray.

Go out in your "jeans and jacket", sprint along the road as fast as you can, then throw yourself head first onto the tarmac.

Get back to us when you've actually done that, and we can have a sensible discussion about whether it's worthwhile wearing armoured gear.
