PostPosted: 14:40 - 26 Sep 2016    Post subject: Windows 10 activation issue after installing HD to new PC Reply with quote

Hi All,

I recently acquired a new decent spec PC without a usable OS, so I took my hard drive out of my old machine and popped it into the new one. Now I have a message displayed in the bottom right hand corner over any other window, it says "Activate Windows - Go to Settings to activate Windows.".

In settings I have an error code, and microsofts website says it is because my Activation key is invalid.

The old PC did have some activation issues when I upgraded from 8 to 10, but I had sorted these and it worked perfectly for the last 8 months or so.

I'm not that confident that I still have the windows 8 disk, it might be in the loft if I'm lucky, but I suspect it isn't.

How do I fix this?

Thanks

log in to the MS account, the Win10 license is probably still assigned to the old machine. Should be able to deactivate it there, then activate the license on the new machine.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/account/

Sign in, click your name and go to View Account.

There will be a list of devices, click view all devices. Then you can remove the old PC from that list.

Just use windows activator or whatever it's called. Since XP any issues with this sort of thing and I've cracked my copy of windows, if they're gonna make it difficult no way am I gonna spend ages sorting it out.

That's what I was thinking of doing, just frustrating since this is the first time I ever legitimately paid for an OS!

You don't need to explain anything to anyone.

When Windows prompts you to active, select "Use the automated phone system to activate" and call the freephone number. It's all very simple

Thumbs Up
