our friend was driving down the motorway in the inside lane doing 50mph (road works so average speed cameras and 50mph limit in force)

she realised she was being boxed in by two lorries going more then 50 there was a lorry in front so she couldn't go forwards or pull out

anyway the second lorry pulled into the inside lane hitting the rear of her car she managed to control it and then lorry did it again couldn't pull over as concrete barrier down the side and no hard shoulder

her car is damaged beyond economical repair (1997 Vectra) and has been taken away to be assessed but she needs a car, the lorry drivers insurance company are saying she has to pay £27 per day for a hire car and can only give her a corsa/micra sized one because of her age

this is no use as she has to fit a 8 year old a 1 year old and a 10 week old in it with a double buggy my boot isn't big enough in my Peugeot for the push chair so a micra is too small
not only that she cant afford to pay nearly £30 quid a day for a car

so question is can they charge her for a car considering she wasn't at fault at all?

she will get onto her insurance but cant until Monday as it is a local broker and closed at weekends but really needs a car for the morning to take her husband to work and kids to school

UK driver or EU trucker?

The hire car would be claimable so any costs can be claimed back

What might be the better option is if she can spend maybe £500 in a similar car. That way the claim pays out water ever it does for injury and vehicle value and she already has a replacement car. She can then sell this car if she chooses to get a better car etc

If she can't afford to buy a car then I'd insist 3rd party insurance fronts hire car costs

She may find her insurance puts her in touch with a claims management company and they may well front hire car costs

Well surely her insurance company has a claim line.....

Stuff contacting the broker. Go direct to the insurance company.

If there is no claim line, then she needs to change broker... Can't simply only drive to their office hours Rolling Eyes

no numbers to ring it is a local company I have used them as well before as they do sort really good deals on insurance the policy is with them but they use an underwriter
she was paying less then 200 quid to insure a 2.0 l Vectra at 24 fc

She has to pay the lorries insurance company £27 a day for a car, but they'll only give her a Micra "because age".

Why doesn't she talk to them and suggest that she needs an equivalent sized car. if they cannot provide it, she will source it from Hertz/Europe Car and pass them the bill for it? See how that grabs them.

I would have thought they'd need to give her a similar sized vehicle, but I could be wrong. Talk to citizens advice maybe?

that's what she has told us they are saying
when we were younger my mate used to hire cars for the weekend he was 23/24 at the time and they wouldn't hire him some of them as he needed to be older so guessing this is still a thing

looks like I will be taking her husband to work in the morning and picking her kid up from school tomorrow

unfortunately he cant drive yet is in a min wage job and she doesn't work so not much spare cash as they private rent a house as old council one was in a right shithole

I'm sure they would say that as it would be cheaper for them and we all know insurers are scum. Talk to citizens advice, see what they are obliged to do....

No debate on this, she needs to get on to the third party insurer and say "Provide a Vectra sized car, today, at no cost to me, or you'll be paying full retail to someone else."

Has she told her own broker about it? If she really did get her back door smashed in then I'm surprised that they haven't offered to sort her with a hire car and bill the 3rd party underwriter for it at some usurious rate.

She can't because they "don't work weekends". I would have thought they'd be falling over themselves to give her a hire car and bill the third party's insurance. Thumbs Up

Surely there must be some contact number for accidents.

Get the paperwork out, there has to be a contact no for the ins co in the event of a accident.
If not then I would be raising a complaint. Given that there are more hours a day they are shut than open.

She also needs to check paperwork, as many policies do not provide a hire car in the event of a accident, and many that do if you want anything other than a basic car. Charge you extra.

Yes I know it's a claim against a 3rd party.

Are citizens advise open at weekends?

Also I've phoned company to see and there is an answer phonemessage with a mobile to call
Apparently someone answers this and logs the out of hours claim and then goes through details when back in office

All well that ends well. (Unless you're the lorry driver.)

Well to be fair to it, it had a stab at interpreting your word as 'dealt'.
