Posting as many might have missed this because it was on BBC2 last night about the same time as that northern Teadrinker failed (probably, I've not watched yet) to go fast again.

This is a genuine guy, seemingly with proper talent, and was a good insight into a team trying to get into 24h racing Thumbs Up

Nope, didn't fail to go fast (you ever done 270mph on a motorcycle? Wink ), and picked up the knack faster than just about anyone else has.

I don't think you get much more genuine on the telly than Guy Martin - probably why opinion is so divided about him.

I looked briefly at the Le Mans thing - just saw some bloke getting in and out of a car and driving around a circuit (volume on mute cos I was occupied with something else, so maybe I'm being unfair and should check it out more carefully).

Sir Chris Hoy is a great bloke and I'm pleased he's got to what he wanted to do in racing, but his talent has come about mainly because of being able to sink bucket loads of spare cash into training himself late in life.

If you've not seen it before, the Racing Legends - Colin McRae documentary is well worth a watch; Chris Hoy reviewing the life of one of his heroes:

Just watched it, a good insight to what really goes on at a racing team. Actually better than the Guy Martin stuff as it wasn't just full of people complimenting him.

Sorry, got the impression you were a Guy Martin hater and probably wouldn't watch it. Still worth a look though.

Smile No, I'd make him a pot of tea, I quite like the bloke. I just worry that his current set of goals especiallyfortelly are a little but contrived and unachievable. Somewhat like he's being set up as a bit of a stooge. I reckon the one with the hydroplaning boat showed him at the point he's realised he's being set up a little bit, when he made himself a plan B.

The funny thing is, everything made for telly is made especially for telly. What else are they gonna make it for? We could always shoot GM and all go back to watching "reality" bollocks and Constipation Street. Or you could just read it as a couple of snippets in a newspaper: "GM to attempt fastest on 2 wheels record", followed by "GM fails to achieve fastest etc" or "GM sets fastest etc".

Having said that, he's always better when his challenges mean getting the best out of some sort of engine imo. And it would be better if they had to always build the machine from scratch.

Being fair he needed to crack the whip at times, when you have a pit stop and not one set of tyres are in the warmers, but he was a knob with the young lad and the Harness fastening.

You don't end up with an all conquering team by just being nice to people all the time. He showed that lad up, yes. I personally wouldn't have felt comfortable doing it that way. But I'm not in charge of a shitton of money and sponsorship, and lives of those involved etc, so I'm not really qualified to have an opinion. I'd guess there are similar things you don't see in high level teams the world over. British Cycling for instance, that Brailsford chap looks like he'd chew you over ever small detail. And that Teresa May looks like she can really swear.
