abus disc locks

are abus disc locks worth the money over a cheaper alternative? i want an alarmed disc lock again and got on well with the xena xx6 until i dropped it, although it did give a few false alarms every now and then. money isnt too much of an issue if it is quality gear, I am thinking of buying this one:

should be same size to fit my disc as the xena xx6 had a 6mm locking pin, and this one seems to be 3x5mm if my reading is correct.

is generally abus the best quality alarmed disc locks about?

I've had in the past 1 x Abus disclock (non alarmed) and 1 x bicycle Abus U lock (£70). Both seized up in less than a year despite constant use and regular squirts of ACF 50. Compare that to 1 x £5 unbranded disclock and 1 x Tesco u-lock (£15) which still work to this day, despite one of them being left outside for 18 months.

I'm not saying the cheapo ones are more secure, far from it, but I am saying that Abus IME are not worth the price tag they command for the brand name.

I've always considered them as a visual deterrent and therefore never really felt the need to shell out big bucks for one. Alarms are annoying and everyone ignores them. If I had an alarmed disc lock that went of while I was inside work and came out to reset it in non bike gear I doubt anyone would stop me and ask me what I was doing, I've sat by my bike and fiddled with it without bike gear on and got a few funny looks but what average joe is going to cross the line and challenge me and ask me if its mine, they all just carry on walking. Alarm may be useful at home to poke your head out the window but I wouldn't count on it being anything special when out and about. Setting themselves of because wind is also something I read, in general not just Abus, when I was considering one a long time ago.

I've read before disc locks are better used through the rear sprocket <debate time>.

Depends what bike you've got suppose. If I had a heavy bike where limited chain options where a thing and steering lock + disc lock was my go to then I'd probably get a well reviewed one and hope for the best but because lightweight tiddler I've put the money into a somewhat better chain.

tbh it would be most useful for me at home as in the dead of night i could hear the alarm go off in my garage and also i think when its very quiet at night and your average chav wants a little play then an alarm would probably scare them off, if not then i am sure i could

obviously not going to stop a professional, maybe i will stick to the xena and buy a new one if other ones dont seem any better.

I currently use an Abus Granit disc lock. Its alarmed which comes in really handy if you forget and try and ride away. Can’t comment on its strength and its durability but I’ve had it over two years now, used it in all weathers and not had a problem. I think I paid around 80 sheets for it.

I've had an Abus HB85 for a few years, suffered more than 4 attacks (that I know of) by bolt croppers (evidenced by marks that appeared on it), it hasn't failed once and still functions perfectly.

It (I) also smashed a caliper when I forgot to unlock it and rode off 4 times in 24 months.

Got this Abus Granit disk lock for my wife. Seems pretty decent, though a bit fiddly to fit on her CBF500, only a few holes in the front disc are big enough for the pin and even then it's tight. Takes some fiddling to get it on and clamped in place, and she often sets the thing off in the process.

No hassle fitting it on my Fazer mind.

Otherwise, it's fine, seems strong, loud, reasonably sensitive, comes with nice pouch to pop it in. Key fob has a handy LED light in it to help you unlock it in the dark - which is a nice touch.

I have that Abus lock, had it for about 2 years. No issue with it except price and the pin is quite thin compared to Xena10 that I have.

Big difference is the Xena I had to remove the battery permanently because the alarm is way too sensitive and thus useless.

The abus is not sensitive. It will only go off under attack from power tool.
