A few months ago we had this: Intel puts the brakes on Moore's Law.

The end of Moore's law is a sign of bumpy times for tech firms and all things related, not just because their computers can't get faster, but because many forecasts and planning decisions are based on Moore's Law, e.g. "Assuming our computers are this much more powerful in two years time, we can start planning projects that are this much bigger or processor-intensive." That's not to mention to rapidly declining ability for chip companies to forecast their sales and growth figures. Major industries may be about to hit the wall if/when Moore's Law stops.

(The above is paraphrased from another article I read which I can't find now)

Luckily: IBM finds a solution (for now).

It seems to me like it is at the same stage as transistor based stuff was 50 years ago.

It'll probably be developed faster as we are far more aware of the applications still I wouldn't expect to see anything consumer based for decades.
